Whenever they show anything on TV about the Atkins or any Low Carb
lifestyle, they always show people just frying in tons of butter, eating a
mountain of bacon and greasy burgers?

Last night our local TV station did a health report on Atkins diet, and
though it was interesting to watch, it was awful that those pictures come up
and show what may be an occaisional breakfast, but never in the portions
that they were showing. *grumble* Even my husband looked at me and said
that I don't eat that way (meaning me) and that was a bad representation of
my WOE.

Just my 2 cents.

Now, look at what a distored view TV & News presents on something as
simple as low-carb and dieting. Think about how wrong not only the
general idea is but how many facts are incorrect and ask yourself how
distorted is everything else they report on--especially much larger,
harder to understand, more complex issues like politics, economy,
international issues, war....

Scary isn't.

This is why I NEVER watch TV news. It is as worse than reading a
tabloid. At least in a tabloid you know the stories are made up and
typically of no consequence.

TV news is rarely real. I know people who have been in the news
for some story or another, and they've always grumbled that what
they showed on television was not "what they meant". So, whether
it's a diet, or a court case, or anything, there's pretty much a
lot that is NOT said.

Ditto to everthing you just said. I also rarely watch the news. They're in
search of ratings, not truth.

The local news here actually did a fairly good piece. I caught it as I was
surfing by since I don't watch the news. It was on hidden carbs in medicine
and otc drugs. It was great because there was nothing about whether LC was
good or bad. The one fly in the ointment was a nutrionist who said something
about people on lc diets needing metamucil because thats what happens when
you don't eat veggies. She slipped it in while talking about the carbs in
fillers. They then went on to list the carb count in items. Very nice to see
something informative and not sensationalized. The station was KRON 4 in San
Francisco, independent station that's heavy on news, Judge Judy and other
synditacted shows.

Jen,

The answer to your question is that the reason the Atkins diet is associated
with fatty meat etc, is that every edition of Atkins book until the most
recent preached a diet that was full of huge steaks and "luxurious cream"

Atkins did not change his tune until other low carb diet books started
gaining on his sales. Then he incorporated their message into his own book.

So the media is not making it all up. If you can find an earlier edition of
Atkins diet book you can see this for yourself.

FWIW, the older version of the diet with all that fat and meat worked just
fine for weight loss.

The Atkins book that I read is full of accolades towards bacon, meat,
fat, etc. That was the main reason why I decided not to follow Atkins,
as such. I cannot believe that eating so much meat with psyllium husks
is the way to live the rest of my life.

The media is not making it up.

They might not be making it up, but they are misrepresenting it. For
instance, I basically never eat steak. I eat as many veges as I can
stomach. Why isn't there at least a side helping of vegetables on the
plate?

But that's you. Someone else posted today that s/he goes entire days
eating no vegetables whatsoever. The media gloms onto folks like that
because they are not "mainstream" and that is a diet that many people
may not consider to be healthy.

Keep in mind, this is just me, but I don't fry my steaks, sausage,
bacon, or eggs in a half inch of grease. Which almost every lo-carb show
I've seen does.=A0And I try to catch them
all.=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0= A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=

Just the few news stories I have seen on tv and read in the paper that
I know about first hand always have something wrong, usually several
things. It is scary.
