It's so hard to keep celery fresh in a vending machine.

No kidding Manky! When I was a kid, pop was a special treat and offered
(not always) on say Friday or Saturday nights. Also, chips (and that
type of snack food) also a treat. Our meals consisted of home-made
meals (there was really no fast foods).

We walked to school (I'm now amazed at how kids are bussed to school for
such short distances). And we walked home for lunch! We had recess
twice a day and then after school we played outside until mom called us
in for supper. Then we would play outside after supper until it became
dark.

WE moved constantly.

A friend of mine has a 9 year old daughter who is obese. Whenever I see
this child, she is eating. It is either a sugar laden or fat laden
"treat"..treat...yah right...it's no treat, it's something the kid gets
every day.

Kids today are not moving, they've no reason to.

I was a teenager of the 80's. Class of 84. We had vending machines in schools.
Or at lunch in the lunch line, could buy the junk food. Or on the way home from
school we could stop at a store to buy it. I did not have much money to buy
these things, when I did..it was a treat to me.

I was bussed back then. But due to other reasons. Desegregation. I was bussed
from a white neighborhood, into a pretty much all black one. Not a prob with me
though. Was some great times. Learning and making friends with other races.
Even food wise. If I missed my bus home, I walked, or took the public bus.

I see the differences with my kids in ways. The exercise part. One of my kids
can take the school bus, yet its a 10 minute walk. He rides his bike. On rainy,
snowy days, I give him a ride.

My kids all have a option of different lunch lines, the junk food line, or the
salad line. They do have various vending machines. I give them money sometimes
to buy a treat. Not all the time though.

Yes, computers, games are more a part of todays life. My kids play games and
computer games. We have two computers at home. My oldest is saving money for a
laptop. I try and limit the time they spend on the games and computers. With
the good weather we are now having, they play outdoors more. In the summer
months, I buy a pool pass for swimming. They go fishing, walking, riding bikes,
playing football, basketball, baseball. etc. Very active in the summer months.
They do tend to get cooped up in the winter and on games and computers. But
then they do shovel snow, go sledding, play in the snow.

I think it depends on the parents too. Taking control of the way they raise
their children. I got to admit, I used to not really pay attention to their
diets. Now, since low carbing.. I do. Big time. They read food labels good.
They have picked up great on low carbing WOE. I hope they carry it over to
their adult lives, and their own children some day.

Things bother me now. Like I "see" the obesity in kids on the rise. I was in
denial before. I do see the inactivity with todays kids, when I did not before.
I try and spread the good word on low carbing. I guess that counts for
something.
