ROCHESTER - Hundreds of students filled the Rochester Middle School gym,
doing push-ups, testing their flexibility and getting physical to help
fight a statewide epidemic: childhood obesity.

The middle school is the first school in the state to run the Fitnessgram
program, an assessment that measures body mass and several activities, like
flexibility tests, to start compiling data on the fitness of the states
children.

"New Hampshire really doesn't have specific data. Were really trying to
encourage more physical activity inside and outside of school," said Tamara
Martin, chair of New Hampshire Healthy Schools Coalition.

She called childhood obesity an epidemic.

Obesity is defined as having a very high amount of body fat in relation to
lean body mass. In 1989, less than 10 percent of New Hampshire residents
were obese. As of 2001, that figure rose to between 15 and 19 percent for
adults.

Child obesity also is rising. The number of obese 6- to 11-year-olds and
12- to 19-year-olds increased by 5 percent between 1994 and 2001, according
to the federal Centers for Disease Control.

The daylong, school-wide session at the middle school on Thursday was the
first student fitness assessment conducted by the New Hampshire Healthy
Schools Coalition. With a $325,000 federal grant, the coalition hopes to
visit 250 schools by May.

Plans are in the works to use information from the assessments to help make
decisions on school nutrition and physical education.

Test results could help adjust or change physical education standards in
New Hampshire schools and have an impact on school meals.
