Default Gastric Bypass Surgery Date Set for June 3, 2008

I have a BMI of 41. I have been heavy my whole life, but in the last 6
months that I have been getting weighed in, and monitored pre-surgery
I have lost almost 50 lbs... but mind you, I have gained and lost that
SAME 50 lbs 10 times in the last 15 years.

I have already cut out alot of junk from diet... (from my lifestyle) -
can't call it a diet (cause diets don't work)... lifestyle changes,
and exercise and the surgery - will give me EXTRA push in the right
direction.

I am 5'3 and weigh in at 240 lbs... they told me with the surgery my
high blood pressure and sleep apnea are almost guaranteed to go away.

Then I am hopeful that my degenerative disc disease, my arthritis, and
weak knees will be helped with the loss of weight that my bones can no
longer handle. Been unable to work due to weight and DDD and arthritis
for over 10 years... looking forward to possibly going back to work.

I am only 41. Too young to retire, and for some reason they won't
grant me SSD. I have tried all the way to appeals twice. Just about
given up all hope, then found a doctor who recommended Gastric
Bypass.

Maybe there is a rainbow at the end of the rain.

Good luck with your surgery. If you want to try to keep off that weight
with low carb and exercise, please be welcome to post here again when
your operation is over. We'd be glad to help you.

Hi Lynn -

Yeah, good luck & best wishes and all that stuff from me, too. Gastric
Bypass isn't something to be taken without serious thought but your
description makes it look like it's probably the best approach for you
at this point. Also sounds like you've thought it through enough that
you'll be focused as you go through the post surgical process of
getting your body back. I'm about to start S. Beach after plateauing
at about 70lbs over where I should be, and I have a decent treadmill
at my place I can use anytime of the day or night. This time of year
will be good for at least the both of us.

Drop a few lines in here and let me/us know how you're progressing.

Default Gastric Bypass Surgery Date Set for June 3, 2008

a friend has a Ab Lounge Chair that I tried, and I liked it...
thinking of purchasing my own, the new 2008 model, comes with a
bicycle add on, and new cushioning for a low impact on head and back,
but tightens the abs... and stomach - that's my biggest problem...
though becuase I have been heavy my whole life, I also have big thighs
and calves.

not too big on top, in fact, before I gained weight I virtually had no
boobs at all... I was a 36 A - now I am a 50 B - big around, but boobs
don't grow. when I got married, the dress had a c cup, they had to
pad the padding. LOL

unfortunately hubby left when I hit 250 lbs... guess I can't blame
him, I don't find men with too big love handles either.

anywho, I had been purchasing clothes from www.roamans.com and
womanwithin.com but this last batch of clothes I bought, are falling
off me... went from a size 3x plus - to a 1x already and the surgery
isn't for a month. but I am looking forward to wearing a size 10 -
never could even as a kid.

I was 106 lbs in the 6th grade, wearing a 14-16 boys husky pants...
and my mom used to dress me in those smock dresses, she thought they
made me look slimmer, all they did was make me stand out even more...

fat kids still aren't the norm, but woman & men are bigger than they
were when I was a kid... you had to be 10-14 size even in your
thirties when I was growing up... now I think more people are
overweight than the size they should be... and it's acceptable now.
that's where commercialism comes in - they show heavier models, so
everyone things it's okay to weigh more... and while I will never be a
4 or 6 - those models even though we look okay at a size 20 - it isn't
all that healthy. look at me, i have had all those problems listed
above since I was out of high school, and when i hit 30 - suddenly it
was okay to be bigger... but not necessarily healthier.

i write poems, as if my email addy doesn't give that away... I wrote
one on being born fat... check it out.

They say I was a cute baby
but I was born fat
and nothing I did growing up
ever changed that

So ate to be happy
And I ate when I was mad
And by the time I was teen
my self-esteem was real bad

Now I’ve been addict
for most of my life,
first it was food...
then I bought a knife.

That wasn't any better
so then I tried drugs
and I went to prison
like one of them thugs

In prison I got clean
But got addicted to men
Who used and abused me
Again and again

I finally broke free
from an abusive man
I’d rather be lonely
Than someone’s garbage can

I tried all kinds of tricks
Diet pills, and starvation
But nothing ever worked
Til my latest revelation

I been to the doctor
He’s been watching my weight
Getting me ready
For a life I won’t hate

I’ve got bad arthritis
And knees that don’t last
But soon my surgery
will make that a thing of the past

I worked up the courage
to seek out gastric bypass
The date is now set
to reduce this body mass

I’m not doing it to be skinny
Although that’s a nice perk
I’m doing it to get healthy
And maybe go back to work

I can’t work at all now
Can’t sit and can’t stand
Filter in my high blood pressure
And my under-active thyroid gland

But the future’s looking up
I’m gonna lose the weight
Protein shakes aren’t appetizing
But soon I’m gonna feel great

I’m gonna be able to walk
Or take stroll along the beach
I’m going be able to work
Gosh, nothing's gonna be out of my reach

Hi there,
Been in this group here for LC'ers since late 90's I think. Their are
some oldbies in here who know my story. I wont bore you with the
details except I am 45, was 410lb and now weight 158 160lbs and had a
RNY gastric bypass procedure Jan 31 2005. You can Google me for this
newsgroup and read to sordid details of low carbing before surgery.
It was a last resort effort to get healthy. I actually started
welcoming death as I laid down at night. I thought I was dying. During
the day I felt I was dying a slow miserable death it was. I had sleep
apnea, arthritis in my right knee ( yeah try hopping around at
410lbs), I had severe asthma, I was insulin resistant and diabetic,
and I couldnt walk to my mailbox. Walmart, Costco and the grocery
store was done in a 3 day one store a day trip. I never dared eat in
public.
I took a lot of negative **** from some very unhelpful supportive
people in here, but I have been around now almost 10 years and there
quite a few in here who have been supportive and my friends through
thick and thin literally! You are welcome here but if you want to talk
WLS only ( there are many other WLS support groups also), you must
have thick skin. If you want to talk LC and WLS incorperated into it
you are most welcome as most of us in here no how to LC and diet in
general

Low carbing and low fatting is a challenge post WLS but thats how the
WLS works. I'm sure you have done all your homework and realize this
is NOT the magic bullet. This a tool that will help you get yourself
out of a situation you feel has no resolution other than a surgical
intervention. People die from this procedure though not as often as in
the early days. You do know that your body no longer will processe
sugar, oils, and carbs like it used to because the part of the
intestine that processes those things is no longer hooked up, right?
Therefor if you eat the oil and sugars it drops into your digestive
system unprocessed. ICK! There is hell to pay. You dump. Dumping
manifests itself in many froms like, the trots, belly aches,
sleepiness, headache, feeling ill like you have the flu etc. It's not
fun. You'll invariably do it from time to time. IT IS AWFUL!!!!Some
people keep doing it and pretty soon its not so bad and they can eat
french fries etc and GET FAT AGAIN! I see it all the time. I'm not
advocating WLS( it was right for ME) nor am I saying don't do it. I
will say this as a WORD OF ADVISE (I'm assuming you want someone help
and opinion or you wouldnt have posted here): Be proactive with your
health, KNOW all your options, BUT follow the rules so that you're
successful at overcoming a life of miserable obesity. This is not a
freebie, ya know a free ride to normal weight. You have to WORK and
WORK hard girlfriend. You can be fat again, this is not the free
ticket to slimdom OK????????

You also know that losing massive amounts of weigh makes you spend
more money like plastic surgery and cool clothes right? smiling I
had a low body lift and went from a size 14/16 pant after my weight
loss was finished to a 8/10 now. A 8.5 hour operation rendered my 30lb
lighter as I had an abundant of left over junk in my trunk and front!!!
Before WLS I was a 30/32 in plus size clothing and a 56D bra. Im now
8/10 on bottom (some 12 non stretchy jeans) and medium/large 12/14
tops and a 38/40 C/D depending on if cup is stretchy or not.
The first thing I wanted to buy but a genuine pair of Levi's jeans and
look good in them! I love my Levi's

It's been a wild ride and I would do it ALL over in a heartbeat. I
haven't had any complications except a low iron level which can happen
to WLS patients but I add to the problem with heavy menstrual periods
also. I eat carbonal iron everyday.

Please be warned: There is much more to this than losing weight.
Issues come up that have to be dealt with regarding how you got fat in
the first place. It's fun to look in the mirror and see the new you
but sometimes distressing when you really dont know who is staring
back at you. I have had counselling and shed many tears letting go of
the old Laureen and accepting the new Laureen.
Also remember that Estrogen is stored in fat, when you experience
rapid weight loss that estrogen has no where to go, thats when you
grow 2 heads, scream and yell, love your family members one minute and
hate them the next and cry at the drop of a hat. Its like PMS x10 but
it passes. PHEW!!! My poor hubby didnt know what top think of the
psycho bitch I temporalily became!

The when you reach your desired weight, you now stress at a couple of
pounds gained during period time and forget this too will pass and be
gone as soon as you cycle through. You become ever mindful of what you
put into your new healthy body. You exercise everyday to keep your new
body and you become thankful for all the beautiful things in life you
can now experience as a noraml weight person and not the one woman
freak show you felt you were before
My best wishes to you. If you would like to email me privately for
some low fat low carb recipes feel free as it is tricky to do. One of
my fav things to eat is and was 1/2 cup of cottage cheese with sugar
free orange jello sprinkled on it and 3 cut up mandarin orange
sections in it.

Save your money. It may in fact work your abdominal muscles. These
are not large muscles and you will not see them without losing a good
about of adipose tissue.

Spot reduction is a myth. It is a nice myth created to sell all kinds
of ab working products.
http://www.exrx.net/WeightTraining/Myths.html
"Contrary to what the infomercials suggest there is no such thing
as spot reduction. Fat is lost throughout the body in a pattern
dependent upon genetics, sex (hormones), and age. Overall body
fat must be reduced to lose fat in any particular area. Although fat
is lost or gained throughout the body it seems the first area to get
fat,
or the last area to become lean, is the midsection (in men and some
women, especially after menopause) and hips and thighs (in women
and few men). Sit-ups, crunches, leg-hip raises, leg raises, hip
adduction, hip abduction, etc. will only exercise the muscles
under the fat."

I think that about sums up why you probably should not bother
with an ab lounge. The bike would be worthwhile. Some dumbbells
and something like Fred Hanh's Slow Burn DVD would be more
worth the while.

Doing lots of sit-ups, which is what the AbLounge helps
you do - I started with a soft round belly and ended up
with a hard round belly.

There are two things I've done over the years that gave a
lot of belly size reduction. 1) Navy boot camp which has
at least several miles of fast marching per day plus plenty
of other exercise. 2) Low carbing which reduced all of my
body fat including the belly.
