Childhood Obesity
Childhood Obesity
Obesity in children and adolescents is a serious issue with many health and social consequences that often continue into adulthood. Implementing prevention programs and getting a better understanding of treatment for youngsters is important to controlling the obesity epidemic. Many parents are rightly concerned about their child's weight and how it affects them. They look for specific answers for prevention and treatment options. Unfortunately, the state of the science is a lot less precise than we would like. Are kids too concerned about their weight? What are the best strategies for prevention? http://obesitydiet.blogspot.com/2006...d-obesity.html |

I notice when something is very important to me, and it involves choice, I manage to do the things I need to do to accomplish my goal. The first thing that needs to be done is convince people that it is bad to be overweight. They say they would like to be thin and want to be thin, but their actions belie an attitude of indifference both for themselves and their children. Afterall, when you see 5-year-olds that are already obese, there is some benign neglect on the caregiver to blame. For me and my child, it is not OK to be overweight, just as it is not OK to not do homework or taxes or pay bills, so I see that it all gets done right. For whatever reasons, fat parents often are not vested in the problem of their overweight kids. dkw |

That they have no choice about it, and neither does the kid. Why fight nature? Enjoy life and that triple hamburger with fries and shake. And feed the same to the poor, doomed children. Heck, if I had had kids when I was a FFID, I probably would have taken the same line. Anything's better than facing up to my own responsibility! Too bad it took over 40 years for me to lose that way of thinking. -- Annie As of 11-16-06: 258/182/140 Standing at 5 foot 4. 76 pounds lost. 42 left to go. Started February/07/05 Come visit my weight-loss web site, Annie Takes Off. http://webpages.charter.net/lenny13/DietFrontPage.html Good going. I see this same nonchalant attitude take many forms. Many people also say they would like to be wealthy, but they buy lottery tickets instead of going to college. To take the attitude a step further on par with the "my genes make me fat" you can even get into sour grapes. If someone is struggling financially, they often become critical of education saying it is a waste of time and unnecessary rather than recognizing it as a road to financial success. Worse yet, they become Democrats. dkw |

Chris (just another ignorant Democrat -- who happens to have an Ivy league undergraduate degree, a graduate degree in computer science, and plenty of financial success, despite her politics) *grin* You know where that was coming from Chris! I'm not anything since I can't vote.. I'd say that politics is better left outside of this group though.. even more if it's going to be addressed as stupidly and offensively as DWK did.. Will~ |

Do you also find racial, religious, and ethnic insults funny? I guess our definitions of "sense of humor" differ. Chris 262/130s/130s started dieting July 2002, maintaining since June 2004 |
