low-carb FRAUD on QVC: Gayle's Miracle Truffles
I woke up in the middle of the night last night, and while channel surfing to find a movie to lull me back to sleep, stumbled across a low-carb foods segment on QVC. The product being shown was "Gayle's Miracle Truffles", being promoted as suitable for low-carb diets and diabetics. This product is fraudulent, and is no more low-carb than ordinary candy. They use no artificial sweeteners and no sugar alcohols. They are coated with semi-sweet chocolate containing sugar, and the filling is sweetened with fructose and dextrose. Gayle makes false claims on the TV segment that "fruit sugar" is a low-carb sweetener. QVC makes false claims on their website that the product contains "no added sugar." On the show, they say that 5 pieces is a "serving," but they never mention how many carbs, nor does the QVC website list nutrition info or ingredients. According to nutrition listing on other websites selling this product, 5 tiny truffles amount to 30 grams carb of which 25g are sugars (negligible fiber). At 6g carb a pieces, they contain as much carb as ordinary Kraft caramels, and more carb per piece than ordinary Hershey's kisses. Would those of you who subscribe to other low-carb sites and boards please spread the word to newbies that this product is complete fraud, and not suitable for low-carb at all. -- jamie ) "There's a seeker born every minute." |

... On the show, they say that 5 pieces is a "serving," but they never mention how many carbs, nor does the QVC website list nutrition info or ingredients. The website does now list ingredients and nutrition information: http://tinyurl.com/3apfn According to QVC, one piece (which would be a little over an ounce) has about 5.5 net carbs, which isn't too bad, actually. I just happen to have a box of regular candy here (Valentine's Day aftermath) which lists 2 pieces (a little more than an ounce) as having 23.5g carbs. So if the Gayle's Truffles labeling is correct, ounce for ounce that would be pretty darn good for a product which doesn't contain sugar alcohol. But since they expressly say they don't have added sugar, yet contain fructose, dextrose, honey, etc., it sure does call into question the accuracy of the nutrition label, doesn't it? I wrote to QVC to complain about the deceptive product description. Thanks for the heads up. Reb |

Note that they say a serving is one piece there, but on the show, repeatedly said a serving was 5 pieces. According to QVC, one piece (which would be a little over an ounce) has about 5.5 net carbs, which isn't too bad, actually. These were very small, seen on TV. This listing says a 7.5 ounce box and shows 15 pieces, so they are half-ounce pieces, not more than an ounce. They continually promoted 5 pieces as a serving on the show, without mentioning the carb count at any time. -- jamie ) "There's a seeker born every minute." |

I was basing the "more than an ounce" thing on the fact that it said it had 7 servings per 7.5-ounce box. It identified serving size as "1," though...so who knows what they're up to? Reb |

low-carb FRAUD on QVC: Gayle's Miracle Truffles
It's a shame really, all the folks that won't bother to buy the book
will eat these "low carb" fantasy foods thinking they'll lose weight when in fact they'll gain instead. Worst thing in the world for me was to do lc halfway, whew ymmv I notice more and more conterfeit foods in the stores claiming "low carb" and most although lower then the previous version are way too high for me to consume. Their version of low carb and mine are completely different. I have learned to stick with the basics and not try to trick myself with the "sugarfree" goodies which helped me regain weight and crave even more. Now I make my own chocolate if I need a treat. Linda lc since 2/98 started seriously again 1/06/04 and hopefully learned my lesson Jim Marnott wrote: On 16 Feb 2004 19:46:56 GMT, jamie wrote: with fructose and dextrose. I can remember back when I was on the unhealthy low-fat fad diet of McDougal and Ornish: EVERYTHING was "low-fat", because that was what sold. The same thing is happening to low-carb. I agree... Many people see "low carb" as a catch-phrase which means "Here's a healthy food", without bothering to really find out what it means. So they'll see something "low carb" and not question it, much like people did with low fat. I remember the Susan Powter days when she'd pick up a box of unidentifiable crap and show you how to do the math on the "percentage of fat by calories", and if the numbers fit, then it was "good to eat", regardless of what was IN it. Similar thing is happening with Low Carb... manufacturers can stick any kind of utter wasteland crap in it, but as long as there wasn't any of those ole nasty carbs then it is ok to eat LOL That's why I prefer food as natural as possible. Takes the guesswork out of everything. CM |

Ignoramus17304 wrote: While I appreciate your interesting investigation, I have long come to the conclusion that all low carb labeled sweets are fraudulent. I fear it's worse than that. The fact that "low-carb" is now the 'in' thing is the beginning of the end. Every damned thing in the grocery store is going to be labeled "low-carb" whether it is or not, and the people who get suckered by that are going to be screaming that low carb doesn't work. Yep. The people who don't know what a carbohydrate is and don't bother to read the *ingredients* will easily get taken in. But not to worry, there are plenty of people for whom low-carb has changed their life, myself included. I look at food in a whole new light now, permanently. CM |
