Squid (calamari) balls? Please help.
Hi,
There's this popular café called Lollicup, which mainly serves smoothies and Boba drinks. They also sell a few yummy fried snacks; they put them in bags and poke sticks into them. They have: * Popcorn shrimp: A big no-no, unfortunately, due to the flour! * Calamari balls: I have no idea. Are these okay? * Calamari triangles: Same as above, except in a triangular shape. * Fried tempura: Again, no idea, but I'm betting it's pretty high carb. So, please give your opinions on the calamari balls/triangles and tempura. This is an Asian café, so maybe someone who's more familiar with the ingredients can help me out. Thanks! |

Calamari balls? How do you get their little legs apart?

Don't even MENTION Lollicup! I'd hate to think how many of my extra pounds are from their pearl (boba tea), which I love. My Lollicup doesn't have the fried goodies (for better or for worse). Are they dipped in batter? Is the filling roughly chopped or smooth? I am thinking it might be something like the shrimp fillings in dim sum or the paste that you put around sugar canes in Vietnamese cooking, but made with squid. Look at recipes for those and even the Thai tod mun for possible clues. I have no idea whether this is the right track though, since I have not experienced the squid balls myself. -- Jean B. |
