Check out rec.running also, they are actually nice folks.

Oh yeah? They can be a little cranky over there. Check out a message from
"Miss Anne Thorpe" sometime.

What was your first clue that she might not like people?

One of my goals for 2004 is to run a 5K. I just discovered there's a
race going past my house and into my park next Saturday. I'm trying to
figure out if I should enter it.

Right now the farthest I can jog without stopping to walk (to bring down
my heart rate) is 2 miles. I go about 5k once a week (for the past 6
weeks or so) where I run/walk and finish in about 45 minutes. I haven't
run outside with hills and ice and snow in many months: all my running
has been on a treadmill lately. I'm 39 and am too fat and have lousy
endurance for someone who wants to be a runner.

So, should I enter this race when
a.) I'm not trained for it yet,
b.) I came down with a cold yesterday and I'm not sure I'll be 100% in
six more days
c.) I'm scheduled to work so I'd have to reschedule the client and
d.) I'm scared to run outside with hills and 20 degree weather and
whatever unknown elements that adds.

What do you think? I intend to run a 5K this year, but I hadn't
actually meant JANUARY when I made that goal. Should I push it or wait?

(Cross-posted to the ASD and MFW.)

Dally

Skip this race. Wait til it warms up a little and you've run out side a few
times - if you can run half the distance, you'll be fine on race day.

Sounds like you love your husband, despite his use of wrong bleach

I don't see how you read *that* into my post, but it's true.

Funny story, just to keep us on-topic for weight-loss (ASD) or boobs
(MFW): I've been trying to figure out how to deal with the depletion of
fat stores in my upper pectoral area.

The other day I brought up the subject with my husband. He wants to get
eye surgery done so we've been saving up for that. I said, "we've
only got enough money for one cosmetic procedure, which one would you
pick, eye surgery for you or a boob job for me." He said, "some choice,
surgery for me or... oh, wait, that's for me, too!"

(He's still picking the eye surgery.)

This is exactly what I was going to say...treadmill running sucks the big
one compared to being out on the road. For starters, you can alter your
pace considerably faster than waiting for the belt to speed up or slow down.
Also, you can take larger strides than on a treadmill. I run much slower on
a treadmill than I do on a road.

That's an interesting point. I just went and looked up the route I was
running in July when on vacation (on Peaks Island in Casco Bay, Maine.)
It was 4 miles around the island and I did that a couple of times and
it didn't seem like a big deal. Of course, running on the ocean on a
beautiful day is slightly different than what I'm contemplating.

I have no idea why you would ask weight lifters about running....post

this
is rec.running, much more appropriate.

I was worried about you when I cross-posted it. I know you hate the MFW
people. But I post there as much (or more) than I post here and there's
a large cross-over in the two groups. The accent in
misc.fitness.weights is first on misc, then on fitness, and only lastly
on weights.

It's sort of like he the accent in ASD is on support and fitness just
as much as on diet. MFW goes off-topic even more than ASD does, and
those threads don't tend to get cross-posted.

But in any case, I didn't figure questions about running were off-topic
in either place. And I haven't lurked in rec.running and my usenet
morals require that I lurk places for a while before I start posting

there.

Dally

Well, hey if it helped you out....I just would never think of asking a
lifter about running, I'd go to the experts, that would be runners. : )

You might want to check out www.runnersworld.com they have lots of great
advice and experience in running.

LOL, well aren't you just a ray of sunshine. You *did* get the

part
where I routinely run 8 miles a week, right? Yes, it's

undertrained for
a 5K, I know that. (Check out subject line.) But I hardly think

I'm in
danger of keeling over from unexpected exertion.

Not if your heart rate gets to 100% of your max during little

jogging.

What if it gets to 110% of your max? Warp speed or somethin'?

OTOH, I don't like the idea of slipping on ice or showing my fat ass in
public in spandex or having such an awful experience that I'm put off
from trying it again when I'm more ready.

Dally

Spandex?? No way...lined windpants are the way to go.

Jenn

GACK! Is someone still wearing spandex??? This is not the 80s! Get thee to a
sports store immediately! Spandex, bleh.......

Martha
Who's hoping there's no big hair or mullets in this ng....

Exactly! We Rutgers men are no wusses!! I rowed the

Raritan...naked!
(It was the '70's...I did a lot of things naked)

I rowed the Raritan in the '80's but fully clothed.

The '70's were, uh, different. Sort of a stoned hangover from the
'60's.

If you were Sig Ep you were a wuss.

I wasn't any of them Greek letters. Just a guy who rowed for a
semester or two. Interfered too much with the...socializing...so I
quit.

Come to think of it, that WAS sort of wussy

I found that Principles of EE and Computer Architecture interfered

too much
with my social life while I was at RU.

That is SO '80's! NOTHING interfered with the socializing and the
weekend rockclimbing. What else was college for? You actually WENT to
class?!?

I definitely need fashion advice. I've got yoga pants (sort of a
cropped-pant length) and I've got generic cotton jersey sweatpants (I
buy the men's because I like the gathered ankles) and I've got spandex
leggings. I don't wear the spandex leggings in public, but they seem
like the right things to run in. Maybe it's because it WAS the 80's the
last time I ran in a race?

I don't have "lined windpants" [whatever those are] and there's no
chance I can get to a store before Saturday. Will the sweatpants work okay?

Dally, try to use some common sense.

You are entering a RACE when you are in a very poor CV shape.

Just what good can possibly come out of it?

Pride of accomplishment.

With so little to gain and so much to lose, I think the answer is
obvious.

You're a wuss.

Also, with ice and snow, you risk substantial injury, especially if
you are not very experienced.

Stay indoors, wear a full body condom. We'll email you with the
results of life.

Also, do you think that rather than misc.fitness.weights, your
question belongs to rec.running?

She's not a freakin' tree-hugging quiche-eating wussy girl! She's a
weightlifter that runs!

DAMN STRAIGHT AARRRRGGG
