I have a handicap parking placard too. I have had it for 2-3 years
ago. I got it when I went to school. Mainly for Fibromyalgia. Some
days, yes I
really need it, somedays I don't and don't bother using it. Its on
the days I do
use it, and I have to circle a parking lot, and there is not enough
handicap
parking spots to part. Then I drive down the rows, and see that
there are
people parked in the spots and they do not have the plackard.

The root cause seems to be that the penalties aren't severe enough to
prevent the rat *******s from stealing from the handicapped.

I think there is not enough handicap parking spots out there for all
of the ones needing them. I get so tired of circling parking lots on
days I
really need a parking spot that is for handicapped, and I cannot
find one.
Then all the ones parked in them, they are legally parked. I either
park at
the back, or go back home.

I also don't think that there's enough common sense used by the
doctors who sign the statements for these things. I know two people
with the placards who got them by being whiny. They have no real
difficulties when it's something they *want* to do (like playing
softball) but still got the placard because they had a doctor who
didn't take his/her responsibilty seriously enough as a gatekeeper for
the program. There's nothing in place to prevent that sort of abuse,
either. Too bad.

Take care,
Carmen

I have a real issue with that, having had a mother who had leukemia and
who needed her handicapped placard when she was at her most ill. It was
something the family took really seriously - we didn't use the
car/placard when she wasn't in the car, and when she *was* in the car,
we expected her to be able to have a spot, particularly for necessary
travel, such as to the doctor.

I have friends for whom the placard is a need for the husband, but the
wife doesn't need it - she's elderly, though. I have to say, she
adheres to that standard, too - she doesn't use the placard when he's
not with her.

SOME people are responsible - but it's barely enough to make up for
those who aren't, *including* the doctors, the cheaters, the whiners.

I agree. Where I live we have a handicapped parking, and there is
another parking section for "expectant mothers". When I was 39 weeks
pregnant in the hot summer, having that temporary "handicapped parking"
was a godsend. I can only imagine how annoying having your parking
place unjustly stolen must be to those who have to live with long-term
handicaps.

And that's exactly the sort of person those spots are meant for. DH
and I have got a plan in place for when he's doing chemo. If it makes
him weak I'll do any actual shopping. If he's too weak to get around
well at work he'll be placed on convalescent leave, so no problems
there. We're lucky, in that we really do not need to use those spots
for him.
Did your mom successfully fight the leukemia?

Amen. It all comes back to selfishness. Too many people practice it
- and they're experts.

Those came along sometime after I was pregnant with Caitlin (she's
going to be 15 next month). What a great idea. :-) That last
trimester can be rather challenging.

I must disagree; my sympathy for his wife increases with each post.

She's shed of him. Why should I pity her?

The sentiment is understandable - probably more so when you're
eligible for one yourself. I'd appreciate it if they would increase
the penalty for parking in a spot without the proper placard or
license plate to 6 months' loss of license.

Penalities are already pretty expensive, so I don't know losing the
licence would be much of a disincentive. You'd have to catch the
slimeballs first, either way.

I'm not sure what they
could do about improper use of someone else's placard or car w/tag.
Not all handicaps are visible, so mere appearance can't be depended
on.

My best friend has a placard, she's youngish (early 50s) and she gets
challenged, even though she uses a cane to walk. That's not the
reason she has a placard, though, you can't see her true disablities.

No. She passed away in 1998.

I gotta love the closest supermarket that has spots for mothers with
infants. That's a great idea, and much cool.
