Default Dieting and Depression

Hey guys, just came across this newsgroup..

Anyways, I recently started a 2400 calorie/day diet down from an approx 4500
calorie/day diet..

I dont know if this is common or not, but I'm feeling really crappy about
myself and just in general since going on the diet im on ("The Testosterone
Advantage Plan" -by MensHealth). Is this a normal reaction to dieting?
Havent dieted in a while so I forget what the experience is like. What can I
do to alleviate this down feeling? Im considering starting an amino acid
supplementation since Ive heard aminos are a great way to help curb anxiety
and depression related problems.

Id appreciate any feedack, Thanks guys.

Hey Fred....
Congrats on making an important decision for yourself.
It is easy to get depressed when you start a diet. You suddenly realize that it will take a loooong time to see the success you want.

Always start with small goals. I laughed when I was bowling one night, because I realized I had lost 15 pounds, the weight of the ball I was holding. I turned to a friend and said..look..I have lost a whole bowling ball from my stomach!!

Suddenly, I realized I had accomplishe something great.

On my diet, I have lost 86 pounds now. I need to lose a total of 150 so I still have a looong time to go ( I will reach it by next year at this time.) Tonight at church, I saw a friend with her child. I asked how much he weighed...and realized I have lost the same as an 8 year old child!!

There are a lot of ideas tying depression with diet. Some diets even say that stress is a major cause of over weight. I would recommend seeing your Doctor if you need medication.

When I start off I feel crummy, after that I feel fine, hungry sometimes but
the only thing that really depresses me is that I feel it's not going fast
enough.

Congratulations on your decision to improve your health. Part of the
depression stems from the whole idea of a diet. You naturally feel that
you are depriving yourself of something that you enjoy. My
recommendation to keep your focus on the fact that you have changed
your diet to improve your health rather than focusing on what you have
given up. Change can be fun, while dieting is still 'die' with a 't' on
the end (to quote Garfield). In our business we focus on the 3-2-1
approach. You take your nutritional supplement tablets 3 times a day,
your delicious, filling, protein shakes 2 times a day, and a healthy,
colorful, tasty meal 1 time a day. Remember to focus on how you have
changed your diet so that you are not feeling deprived. I hope this
