Diet soda
This may have been addressed-
I drink (what seems to be) a lot of diet soda- sometimes as much as 2-3 cans a day. I drink 64-96 ounces of water in a day, I don't start hitting the soda until after I get home- What kind of impact does this have on weight loss? The only thing on the nutrition info is 35mg Sodium. Browsing the messages it sounds like most people drink just iced tea or water with their wegiht loss regimen, but the soda may be a tough one for me to give up BTW- Just found this group, and it's inspriing me to try and get my nutrition under control. Thanks in advance |

There are different schools of thought on this. Some people seem to believe that artificial sweeteners and diet soda are bad in general, and should be avoided. Others thing that it's only the calories and nutritional information that counts, and that drinking any sort of low cal drinks are fine. I personally am in this camp. I drink an insane amount of ice tea sweetened with Splenda. I go through the equivalent of a five pound bag of sugar in about a week and half. I also drink a number of splenda sweetened sodas. Some people do have problems with using artificial sweeteners, but I don't seem to be one of them (nor do you, from the sounds of it). I know that if I were to make the switch back to sugar, I certainly would not be losing any weight at all. Browsing the messages it sounds like most people drink just iced tea or water with their wegiht loss regimen, but the soda may be a tough one for me to give up There does seem to be an all water or nothing sentiment going strong on most of the diet support venues I visit. Just because the proponents of this view are vocal and sincere in their beliefs doesn't mean that they are 100% correct. I do believe that there are some people who simply can't tolerate the fake stuff, but for those of us who can, and don't really care about the other things that are in diet soda, why the heck not? BTW- Just found this group, and it's inspriing me to try and get my nutrition under control. Glad you found us! I've gone through periods where I post, and others when I just lurk. I've found lots of good solid information that has helped me with my weight loss efforts. Just don't be put off by some of the stronger personalities you might encounter here (as in any internet based venue) and you'll surely find this to be a valuable resource. -- Annie As of 06-30-06: 258/189.5/140 Standing at 5 foot 4. 68.5 pounds lost. 49.5 left to go. I think you can drink diet beverages and still learn healthier eating habits just fine. For me, now, an apple satisfies my sweet tooth just fine, when before only cake, pie, or candy would do the trick. I think there are good, valid reasons for wanting to give up diet sodas. But one does not /have/ to in order to lose weight. -- Annie As of 06-30-06: 258/189.5/140 Standing at 5 foot 4. 68.5 pounds lost. 49.5 left to go. Thanks in advance Binky, Welcome! I'm in the water camp most of the time. I don't do soda of any kind or sugar substitutes OR caffeine. I'll have 1 or 2 pints of low-sodium V8 a day, when I feel it. Add a litle lemon juice to your water for a welcome tang on occasion. As long as you maintain self-control and continue reducing predictably, diet soda may not matter. Imho, Andy |

Imho, Andy I would probably be more worried if diet soda was the *only* thing I drink. I (along with most of my peers) are computer gamers, and most of them drink nothing but non-diet soda, and little to no water. I was able to kick the sugary soda habit about 5 years ago, and I don't really have an urge to drink it anymore- I figure if I can kick that habit, I should be able to stick to more dramatic improvements in my diet. |

Thanks so much for the kind words! Undoubtedly I'll have some questions in the future. Surprisingly, this is the only place I've found good, practical answers on weight loss, although I admit I didn't look too hard online. My "friends" are all either too polite to say anything, skinny as a rail, or have bad advice. Most of the overweight people I know have gone for the surgery. Even my doctor has been no help whatsoever. |

Binky, That's the right attitude, only you just traded one substance for another. I smoked cigarettes in various quantities for 30 years and quit cold turkey 09/01/04. Then I put on 70 pounds from teaching myself how to gourmet cook and not go out to eat instead. Dismal failure for me. But if you're not on a diet, I'd make you a to-die-for cayenne fettuccine with chicken in alfredo sauce, to prove a point. LOL! And HERE I AM at a.s.d! [BOO-HISS] All the best, Andy |

Diet soda
Diet soda leaches calcium from your bones promoting osteoporosis and broken
bones. If it contains caffeine, it drains fluids from your body. I don't think you have to give it up entirely. I often have a bottle or 2 of Diet Pepsi and I don't think it hurts in the long run. Mostly I drink unsweetened green tea though because it is more refreshing. doug Browsing the messages it sounds like most people drink just iced tea or water with their wegiht loss regimen, but the soda may be a tough one for me to give up |
