Can an Insulin user go low carb?
Hi: If there are any diabetics on this newsgroup I was wondering if anyone on insulin has lost weight on a low carb diet. If so how did you manage to adjust your insulin. I take two shots a day of mixed insulin.
I guess if I was on the insulin where you use it each time you eat it would be better. If this is the case I will ask to be put on it.Thanks for any answers I receive. Pat |

Pat Pat, Not only can you go low-carb, but if you go very low carb, you might be able to reduce or eliminate your insulin usage, and potentially reverse some of the damage the disease has caused you. I recommend you read "Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution" and visit: http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com/ Most important, though: do NOT reduce your carbs while taking insulin except under a doctor's direct supervision! If you're not carefully matching your insulin intake to your carbs, you can become hypoglycemic. (I'm 99% sure you know this already, but add it just in case.) |

I was going to reply with the exact same advice. Thanks for saving me the typing, Tom. -- As you accelerate your food, it takes exponentially more and more energy to increase its velocity, until you hit a limit at C. This energy has to come from somewhere; in this case, from the food's nutritional value. Thus, the faster the food is, the worse it gets. -- Mark Hughes, comprehending the taste of fast food |

}Hi: If there are any diabetics on this newsgroup I was wondering if }anyone on insulin has lost weight on a low carb diet. Personally, I was using 85 U of Lantus at night prior to going LC and was still averaging 145+ on the meter. I also gained 45 pounds after adding insulin to my regimen 3 years ago. Last October, my A1c was near 8.0. Since that time (March 1st) the only time I take insulin (which isn't often) is after too many rum & diet cokes (alcohol causes my blood sugar to spike for a couple of days). Five weeks into LC my A1c was tested and was 7.2 with a meter average of ~125. I am down 24 pounds and counting. I do make sure to check my blood sugar often but I never had problems with going low to begin with (just high). My Endo said to reduce the insulin to 35 U when I take it. As already said, work WITH your doctor -- it is a team effort... Later, Dave ** 295/271/210 ** LCing since 3/1/04 |
