Default All this talk about running.....

I decided to try running on the treadmill tonight and I'm happy to say it
went much better than I expected. I alternated between walking at 3 mph and
running at 3.8 mph for the first mile (1/10 mile increments). The second
mile I simply walked at 3.2 mph - didn't want to push it on my first
attempt. The heart rate monitor indicated I was staying within my target
range during the running stage and I never felt a burn in my leg muscles.
Muscle burn in the legs plagued me on my previous attempt at running a few
years ago. Pain in the knees was an another problem but I think the leg
work at Curves and biking has solved both these problems. Now I need to
work on building up my endurance. If I'm going to do any running outdoors
I'll definitely have to buy some running attire. I don't think my neighbors
would approve of what I was wearing tonight - leopard print pajama bottoms,
long john top and my red/white/blue running shoesg They would laugh me
out of the neighborhood.

Maybe I'll have another sport to occupy my time in retirement besides the
bike riding!

Thanks. I don't think you would want to see this outfit. I caught a
glimpse of myself in the closet door mirrors and it wasn't a pretty sightG

Jogging is a great sport for young and old. I am happy that you took
it up. Just make sure to never run when you feel pain in your joints,
and take care of your heart. Give your grandchildren some bragging
materials.

The pain was never in the joints even on my previous attempts at running.
The pain was in the muscles surrounding the knee. I think the last few
months of resistance training at Curves has helped to alleviate this
problem. Those squats and leg extensions have certainly helped.

I've never had any health issues associated with heart problems. My only
health problem has been the onset of osteoporosis. The weight training and
running should help to build stronger bones. The only activity my doctor
has ever expressed any concern for is my bike riding. I think he's afraid
I'll take a spill and break a bone. He's always reminding me to be careful
when riding the bike. He's often commented that if all his patients in my
age group (soon to be 62) were as healthy as me he might go out of business.
I made it a point not to tell him about the major collision my granddaughter
and I had on the bike trail this summer. We both went sprawling on the
ground and did some minor damage to my bike and damaged the braking system
on hers. Fortunately neither of us was injured and a trip to the bike shop
repaired all the bike damages.

Thanks Paul. I doubt I'll ever be fast but I would like to increase the
endurance. As I said in a previous post this outfit was hideous and will
never be seen outside the house. I forgot to mention I had my Mickey Mouse
socks on with the running shoes and they did nothing for the outfitG

Sounds like you're off to a good start. I wouldn't worry much about
attire - you haven't been to too many races, have you? I've seen some
pretty wild stuff out there, especially in the November race I did. Your
leopard print would fit in just fine. Check www.runnersworld.com for advice
on how to dress for outdoors. For warmer weather I can honestly recommend
shorts with a built in panty and a sports bra that specializes in wicking
away moisture. Chafing just plain sucks.

My son and a nephew were runners when they were in school. These two had
some pretty wild outfits.

I certainly want to avoid the chafing. I've had some problems with that
after long bike rides and it doesn't feel good. Proper clothing can make a
world of difference. I'll have to check out the runnersworld site.

Something I noticed with biking and running. I've been a biker far longer
than a runner. And when I started running and have gotten into running, BF
even commented about how *hard* I run (not endurance, but the thumping of my
legs).

Today while riding it dawned on me. When I ride, and ride hard, I'm
pushing my legs in the downward motion. My legs are much more used to this
kind of motion, so when I run, its like i run like an elephant.

My next thing about running to look into is to change my stride so that I'm
lighter and generate more energy. There is actually techniques to running -
just one of those things i never knew. :-)

One other thing about running: make sure you're running on the middle
portion of your feet. Don't run heel to toe if you can help it. A small
minority of runners find it to be their natural way of running, but it can
cause injuries to most runners. Run light, starting from your mid sole.
Check out www.runnersworld.com if you want more info on running strides.
