Cool..., so let's see..., if I run today & burn 250 calorie,
then consume 15000 calories of my favorite chocolate chip
cookies, I'll ....

(250 - 15000)/3500 = -4.2

.... lose a little over 4 pounds! Got to love that math )
!

Keep in mind that it takes your body approximately 12
calories per pound (since I assume you are male) just to
exist on a daily basis provided you actually walk around and
do stuff. If you were say, 175 lbs x 12 cal = 2100 plus the
250 you burned in exercise then you'd be looking at
2350-15000/3500
= -3.61

And a negative number for weight loss is weight GAIN... Come
on people, you all are supposed to know what are negative
numbers.

(calories spent - calories eaten) / 3500 = weight LOSS

If you eat more than you spend, you get a negative number on
the left, and therefore a negative loss, or a GAIN.

Useless anecdote: Scientists working in Antartica have to
consume 8000 calories a day just to maintain body weight. so
if you REALLY want to lose weight and aren't prone to major
depression, you know where to go!

Wow, is this really true? What do they do in antarctica? Maybe
they need better clothes?

i
much impressed

Even with nulti-layers, they're always cold. Temp varies from -20F

Running MAY damage joints (knees and hips). It's best to be careful
and never run when you experience joint pain. You can start, but be
ready to curtail running. Again, pay attention to your condition and
be careful.

You can lose weight without running, or with running, only if you eat
less calories than you spend.

(calories spent - calories eaten)/3500 = your weight loss

So then what's the point of exercise?

The point of exercise is cardivascular benefits. Plus imrpoved sleep a lot
of people report (me included). Plus, staving off bone loss, plus improved
cholesterol. Plus a whole host of other things.

But, technically, no, you do not need to exercise during a diet.

Hi, I am rather heavy (kg. 75 x 1,65, female) but I would very much
like to run for leisure and for loosing weight.
I read that running is not the best thing for those who are
overweight, but I cannot loose weight without running (tried with
biking, skiing, diet, but loose just nothing).

At your height and weight you probably aren't too heavy to run, but it
depends on the condition of your joints and muscles. I didn't start
running until I was under 200 lbs because I had concern about my
joints and didn't want to end up with long-term injury. I had also
been doing strength training to develop and strengthen the muscles in
my legs (and elsewhere).

The key to healthy running is in the shoes. Heavier runners benefit
from a shoe made for stability or severe pronation. To get more
information about that you may want to check www.runnersworld.com

The 5 mile (not 5K) that I hope to run in March has a special
division for men over 200 lbs and women over 150 lbs. It's also
sponsored by a brewery and will be serving beer at the after-race
party

Running isn't the only exercise that will help you lose weight, but
it is a way to burn calories quickly.

Ok... where is this "Beer Race"? We only get water, bananas and bagels

The key - in my opinion - for heavier runners to avoid injury, especially
those just starting a running program, is rest.

Try this if you are just starting: jog one minute and walk four minutes and
do this for twenty minutes. Next day the same for 21 minutes. Add a minute a
day until you reach 30 minutes, then tak a rest day. No running.

Repeat this the next ten days except jog 1.5 minutes and walk 3.5, again for
20 minutes. next day 21 etc. Keep increasing the jogging time and reducing
the walking time by 30 seconds until you are jogging 30 minutes without
walking.

Don't worry about how far or fast you go. Just do the time. And take the
rest..

I've seen this program work time-after-time.

Wisconsin - beer captial of the US.

Many running races have beer afterwards. Heck, some have beer during. Ever
hear of the Hash House Harriers? It's a "drinking club with a running
problem". They started in the UK and have clubs all over the world. The
group gets together once a week. One member is the hare and all the other
members chase the hare. At different spots throughout the race, they have to
chug beers.

And here in SF, we have the "Longest Moving Block Party", which is actually
the largest road race in the world. The Bay to Breakers has been happening
since 1907, when it started as something to get the city's residents spirits
up after the '06 earthquake. It started very small and only men and has
blossomed into a race that can get over 100,000. It's a wild, wild party.
The elite runners take it very seriously, but for the rest of us, it's a
wild, fun event. Half the folks run and half walk. Some, ok a lot, of folks
wear costumes and there's even a costume contest. Some people even do it
naked, unfortunately. It's unfortunate because they're never people who
should ever be seen without clothes. : )

But, I walk it every year and will do it again this year.

how are you cycling? Are you peddling fast enough? or just putting along. you
want to get your heart rate up. You usually peddle atleast 80 revolutions per
minute minimum.
the advantage to cycling is you can go for hours.
I do two 10 mile rides a day and have no trouble loosing weight.
