Diet Pills! Lose 80 Pounds in 3 days.......
I saw one of the neighbors today while I was walking the dog. She
noticed my weight loss, complimented me & asked me how I did it. So I told her: I ate less food and that, at least five days a week, I walk for thirty minutes or more. "No pills?" She asked. Nope. "Did you have that surgery where they tie your stomach?" Nope. "Ummm... what pills did you take?" None. "Did the doctor give you a prescription for medicine?" No. "Did you have that surgery?" Anyway, she wouldn't let it go. She wants to lose thirty pounds herself, and she says that her son is really overweight and she wants him to lose weight too. She came up with about fifty different ways to ask the same damn question of "what magic trick did you use?" She's the third person in three days who has really pushed for information and was not able to accept the truth. They're in denial, I guess. Would have been the perfect opportunity to sell 'em some snake oil. |

I know I might know this if I was paying more attention, but does your current WOE involve careful monitoring? I think that's the element I've missed out on over the past few years. People like this woman here mantras like "eat less, move more" and they think "oh I can do that" and they do, kind of, for a while, off and on.... but it ends up in frustration, and in the end a disbelief that eating less and exercising can actually lead to qualitative bodily change. So for me, I'm hoping that "paying close attention" can be the "magic bullet" of which she was speaking... Kirk, 227/221/180 You may be on to something. :-) Like many (most?) serious dieters, at first my weight came off very easily. However, the closer I got to goal, the losses slowed down dramatically (and disappeared, some weeks). I finally broke down and bought myself a nutritional scale after being very resistant to the idea (basically thought it would just be too much trouble). Well, that was the key to being able to finally get off the plateau I had been on for weeks. I was amazed at how drastically I had been underestimating portion sizes and caloric content. Obviously, portion control has never been one of my strong suits. ;-) I'm hoping that with continued use of the scale I will train myself to practice more realistic portion control. The scale doesn't lie! Jane 235/137/127 |

The scale doesn't lie! Jane 235/137/127 That's really why I still keep weighing and measuring. Once before, about 7-8 years ago, I lost a fair bit of weight, but I just completely plateaued at around 200 lbs. I wasn't counting calories, just "eating right", and I think I just got to a point where I was eating enough to maintain that weight. But not counting calories, I never really knew how much I was eating. And then I had some stressful things happen in my life and got sick and had to stop exercising for a while, and after that I let the eating creep up gradually -- still eating mostly healthy stuff -- and my weight went right back up. So now I feel like I want to keep monitoring it, at least for the forseeable future. Chris 262/130s/130s started dieting July 2002, maintaining since June 2004 |

I've seen it in my life as well. Everything from "I don't have time to exercise" (when the person doesn't work at all and has plenty of time) and "I can lose weight just doing that popular low-carb thing" (then they don't follow it as you're supposed to and wonder why they aren't losing). People just have to come to the conclusion that it's simple math. Less in, more out. Basic. Whether or not they ever get that is up to them. Having lost 52.5 pounds now, I'm having the same experience. Everyone wants the magic bullet. There just isn't one. |

They would complain about their weight, as they were sipping on a 1200 calorie starbuck's frappacino, and talk about how they had no time for exercise. The way to truly lose weight is not something that appeals to many people in this day and age. You can't do it by sitting on your ass all day, it does actually require sweat and effort. -- OregonChick 138/136.8/125 |

Diet Pills! Lose 80 Pounds in 3 days.......
The woman across the street does the exact same thing. About once a
month she comments on my weight loss, then asks me to explain the whole WW Core Plan....again. And then admits that she couldn't give up her junk food. Fine...enjoy your junk food. And your insulin shots. |

I can't tell you how many times I've heard that "if I had time to exercise like you do..." Please. I'm not currently working right now so yeah, I've got more time in the day than the average person, but you know what? I exercised when I was working full-time too. It's a matter of priorities and MAKING the time. Plus, I'm not sure what these people are considering exercise. It's like they believe they have to get a trainer and be in the gym 24/7. Well, no. You can start slowly and just walk around the block at a good pace every day or whatever. One of the people I heard the no time excuse from has a treadmill in her house!! Hello!! Use that. Excuses, excuses... something that appeals to many people in this day and age. You can't do it by sitting on your ass all day, it does actually require sweat and effort. Couldn't have said it better. |

Fine...enjoy your junk food. And your insulin shots. No kidding! This is the problem that a lot of people don't want to face: you want to enjoy your junk food, you can "enjoy" the medical maladies that come with it most notably diabetes, which can be a real bitch in terms of wrecking havoc on your body. Seriously people, that doughnut just ain't worth it. Well, don't get it wrong: i think the most current belief is that it's not what you eat in and of itself, it's the high correlation between consistently poor food choices and obesity. Not to preach, because I know I'm in no way immune or above this, it's the entitlement culture we're all soaking in. People feel that they "deserve" that daily treat, or two, or three, even if they have no evidence of having instincts that would let them compensate for that kind of indulgence, and aren't willing to monitor closely like I am now. (Which is the theme of the Hacker's Diet) Funny thing is, same goes for consumer goods, and houses, etc. People get so exposed to the "good life" through the media, and easy credit is so widely available, that people just spend and spend and have no concept of living within their means, and get a bigger better house than they actually need, and other big ticket luxuries. (Feh, not that I've been good at saving lately (though I'm out of debt and have some money kicking around)-- actually, budgeting of money is an interesting mirror of the budgeting of calories that I'm doing now, and I should probably consider a similar approach, studying what money goes out as closely as I study what food is coming in...) -- QUOTEBLOG: http://kisrael.com SKEPTIC MORTALITY: http://kisrael.com/mortal "The real problem with having mind-controlled zombies as my servants is that it's tough to get up a really sincere-sounding round of cheers when I've come up with a plan I think is worth cheering." --Maximus, X-Factor |
