Matt,

I munch down raw bell peppers (chilled). Had a red one between breakfast
and lunch and just finished a green one.

I like the crunch, the mild aromatic flavor and it's filling.

I'm glad to see that you're asking about snacks and not snakes :-).
But seriously, there are a lot of options, depending on what you like
and on what you're eating the rest of the time. Some things I like
for snacks:

- fruit
- raw veggies (or cooked, of course, but raw is more convenient)
- hard boiled eggs
- handful of nuts (calorie dense, but good for you)
- lowfat cheese or yogurt
- protein shake or bar
- a little peanut butter (also calorie dense) on a piece of fruit or
a fiber cracker

Things that are high in fiber like veggies, fruit, and whole grains
will help you feel full. And they're generally considered to be good
for you in other ways.

My favorite is salt/pepper mixture ... it takes care of those cravings for
chips and other such sorts of things ... I don't know anyone else who does this
though ...

Snow peas or sugar snap pea pods. No prep other than washing required.
Easy to cart around.

I take one day fruits and the next raw veggies. Once a while, if I want
something sweet I get the fruit cups in jello. That is pretty good.

Air popped popcorn works for me, especially if I need something crunchy.
Sometimes I'll add FF cheese powder but not very often.

I like pretzels or carrot sticks. It's the crunch I crave!

I like dry cereal. Usually frosted miniwheats or honey nut cheerios.
It's definitely the crunch.

Maybe not the healthiest snack, but it's better than the cookies and
candy.

Not really

It's low fat, fairly low cal, and it has some added vitamins.

Low fat food is a "crock" It just has more sugar and starch and fillers
IMO. I wouldn't give a frosted mini wheat to my dog. Besides, according
to the TV commercial they have a split personlity!

Really?

Let's compare.

Plain Hershey bar (43g) 1 cup frosted miniwheats (55g)

calories 230 190
% fat 52% 0.05%
total fat 13g 1g
-saturated fat 9g 0
cholesterol 10mg 0
sodium 40mg 0
potassium 0 160mg
total carbs 25g 45g
-dietary fiber 1g 6g
-sugars 22g 11g
other carbs 0 11g
protein 3g 5g

So, there are only two areas where the cereal is higher - potassium
and "other carbs".

First of all, I said this was not for a lo-carb diet. I am not on a
lo-carb diet, nor do I want to be.

Second, the cereal is a larger serving, both in terms of actual grams
of food, and volume. And frankly, it takes longer to eat it and is
more satisfying. I could easily eat two candy bars in less time than
it would take me to eat the cereal, and then even those other carbs
would be moot.

Also, the cereal is no cholesterol or sodium, only a very tiny amount
of fat. And those things are important to me. This isn't just about
weight, but blood pressure, arteries, and my heart. I would like to be
a healthier person overall, not just an unhealthy person who happens
to be skinny.

And of course, the calories are lower, and when it comes down to it, I
believe the keys to losing weight are consuming fewer calories and
burning more.

The only way that the cereal would be be a worse choice is if you are
on a lo-carb diet, and in that case, both choices would definitely be
bad. Otherwise, I can't see how you come up with the cereal being
worse than a candy bar.

Meghan, sometimes Carol just needs ignoring :-).
