Hey all! I've been lurking on this newsgroup for a little while and
find it interesting reading.

I'm not really doing Atkins, just sticking to whole and multigrains
and elminating processed food as much as possible. Probably eating
about 100 grams of carbohydrates a day, give or take. I do have a
question about Atkins, though and I wonder if someone who's done
induction can answer it. I understand induction acts as a kind of
natural diuretic and you can lose a couple pounds of water weight in
the first two weeks or so.

How does this translate into inches and if you do lose inches where do
they tend to be from? I'm asking for a slightly selfish reason, I want
to wear a certain dress for a wedding and it would look better if I
had an inch less stomach. I wouldn't expect the loss to be long term,
I'm doing the slow but sure fat loss for that, but a reasonably quick
and healthy shrinking of the gut for that one night would be nice.

Hey, I think usually people lose a lot of water weight on induction,
because for most people going to 20 grams a day is a very drastic change.
Also, you're so close to goal you may not lose enough to tell the
difference. My suggestion: lingerie shops make some great undergarments for
smoothing and sucking in the tummy, and a lot of them are quite comfortable.

I'm probably going to do just that, thanks for the suggestion. I
really wish crunches were as effective as the women's magazines
claimed they were, the lying rags. Heh.

I know that others have said you can't expect to lose from your tummy, but
let me tell you what happened to me.

In the first two weeks, I lost about 14 pounds, and 2 inches in my waist.
Others who've measured themselves on starting and after a couple of weeks
have said the same thing.

I do *not* claim it will happen to you. I *do* ask this: except for a

few
pounds and an inch or two, what've you got to lose?

Chakolate

One thing to note here, the OP stated she was already eating low carb (about
100g per day), so she may not experience the large loss of water weight
because of this. Also, she is only about 15 pounds overweight at this point.
She may get a small effect from it, but I find it highly unlikely that she
will lose any large amount of water weight or inches.

Chris

That's probably true. *sigh* Not worth the effort then, as I've no
plans to go that low carb on a permanent basis.

I really wish there was something effective you could do about bizarre
little gut protrusions, but I guess if there was someone would already
be rich off of it.

There is, and they are. It's called liposuction. :0)

Well, crunches are effective for toning and strengthening
the muscles of the abdoment, but that doesn't mean you will
be able to see the effect. You have to lose the fat to see
those muscles, and crunches aren't particularly good for
burning a lot of fat.
