Default Work out while sick??

I work out at Curves, and I skipped some workouts last month, and I just
started getting back into a more regular schedule. And then today I wake
up with a head cold. Nothing serious, just runny nose and a bit of a cough
and my nech aches. I feel like I could do the workout with no ill effects
as long as I don't push too hard, but I don't want to leave my germs all
over the place and get everyone else there sick. And I'm a little worried
about working out when you're sick: is it ok or will it make me even
sicker? If it is ok, I could do some jogging and push ups and stuff at
home.

Michelle - I applaud your desire to do the workout, but do believe it would
be best if you did it at home. I've got 2 friends who are recovering from
chemo and getting a cold is a real major problem for them. This has made me
much more aware of the downside of spreading viruses.
Just my opinion,

Everything I have ever read states you should not work out very hard when
sick. A nice walk to get some fresh air will get your system moving and
enhances your immune system.

A hard workout can drag down your system as your body has to expend energy
to support the effort.

Yeah, I really don't want to get anyone else sick. I HAVE to go to work
today, no way around that, but we do have hand sanitizers there and I will
do my best not to breathe on anyone. Do you think it will have adverse
effects on my health to do some exercise at home today? Actually, since
the original post I am feeling worse and worse, I may just take it easy and
have some chicken soup (no noodles, of course!)

Why not do a few push ups, some squats, and some crunches at home -- and
then a walk (it is lovely here so I'm sure it is in Atlanta too)? I hate it
when people show up in the gym sick, spreading germs everywhere. Remember,
most people in the gym breathe harder too, since they are working out.
"Yuck" is the only thought coming to my mind thinking of you in the gym with
me

Or, you could just cool out for a another day or two and let this pass.
There will be periods of time in which you won't be able to work out --
those times can be used to let your body relax a bit. The important thing
is that you establish a habit of regular exercise that you can carry into
the long term. Missing a workout or two won't be a problem as long as you
keep that the exception rather than the rule -- and only you will know for
sure.

Thanks, I should have seen this coming. Twice a year I always get sick,
when it gets warmer and when it gets colder. Well, it just got colder, so
I shoulda known.

My gym has alot of older ladies.. and although i'm sure the younger
are just as vulnerable to the viruses.. I'm always worried about the
severity that the older you are , that it seems to be.

For yourself too... your body needs all it's nutrients to repair
itself.
I'd opt for a walk ... perhaps a few pushups or crunches at home. but
I certainly wouldnt push too hard.

Hope you are feeling much better soon.. and that it's a short lived
virus.

Default Work out while sick??

My advice is:

DON'T WORK OUT.

I know it sucks. I've been through a thousand scenarios like yours since I got
all committed to fitness. What I've discovered is that if you're sick, you need
to stop running around and take it easy for a day or two. Sometimes that you
came down with something at all is a BIG CLUE that you're overtraining, since
exercise usually increases your immune response instead of suppressing it.

If you're in this for the long haul, then you should be getting into the
habits of longterm commitment, for example learning the difference between the
time to rest and the time to kick ass. Resting when you're sick means you'll
get better sooner and your workouts will probably feel better after a little
catchup muscle fiber repair.

If you feel all panicky about missing a day or two, then look at your workout
schedule in weeks instead of days. Say, okay, I didn't hit Wednesday and
Thursday but I still worked out three days this week which is enough to keep my
burn rate up. Plus I don't feel like **** because I was smart enough to stop
punishing myself when I got sick. Therefore I am a true fitness genius and not
a poseur in pink tights.

Go to bed. Your abs will still be there in the morning.

Yeah, I think it's just the change in the weather. I mean, I obviously
caught a bug from someone, but just the last 2 days it all of a sudden got
cold at night and I think that made me vulnerable. It happens every year,
when it gets cold and when it gets hot.

Thanks, I don't feel panicky about missing a day or two, it's just that
last month I only worked out 1 or 2 times a week instead of 3 like I'm
supposed to, and this week I started getting back on track. It's a
psychological thing, slacker inertia, you know?

Purely anecdotal, but I did my exercises on 9/2. I had added 4 HIITS to my
34 minute biking AND did more reps in weight training. After exercising, I
was MASSIVELY fatigued -- I felt like I had used up ALL my energy; my arms
felt too heavy to reach to open a cabinet. By evening I was unquestionably
sick. I probably was already getting sick and just didn't realize it. By
working out, I had inadvertently used up almost my entire store of my rapidly
diminishing energy. If you are sick, then your body needs to concentrate
it's energies on fighting it off. I didn't KNOW it at the time -- if I had,
I would have either skipped it that day or gone VERY easy -- only enough to
SLOWLY loosen up a little on the bike. I don't think the exercising made me
sick, but I DO think it sapped all my energies at a critical time in fighting
off whatever it was that I got. It might not have been so bad or lasted so
long if I had known.

As far as exposing other people, I work out at home, so I would only be
contagious to myself. If I were working out at a gym, I would not be happy
about someone else coming in and knowingly spreading their germs all over
the equipment I would be using. At the very least, you might want to bring
some antibacterial wipes with you.
