Elly This is a good suggestion. Sometimes fruits don't agree with me very well, but I can work on it -- at least now while they're fresh. Chris 262/141/ (145-150) |

Well, it seems I've lost two pounds in the past week, despite eating rather carelessly (not excessive calories, but more sugar and fat than usual) and exercising less. Today I weighed in at 141. I'm feeling a little conflicted about whether to change my goal range (145-150). It's hard to feel like I want to gain weight -- after all this time focusing on losing -- but I'm certainly not trying to continue losing either. I'm going to up my daily calorie target to 1500 (has been 1400 for the last few weeks), though I don't know that I'll hit it today as I feel like I'm starting a cold and my throat is sore. I think I'll leave my goal range as is for now and play it by ear. Chris (two months into maintenance) 262/141/ (145-150) Wow, your continued loss is amazing, Chris! I agree -- see what happens with your body naturally and perhaps set a "too low" mark where you might want to consult with a good nutritionist or get bloodwork done or something just so you have the peace of mind knowing that all systems are go. 1500 calories sounds like a good strategy. Mary Good point, and something I'll keep in mind. The thing is, I am not really worried at this point about getting to any unhealthy low, but about continued loss of muscle that I don't want to lose. This is because of the weightlifting, rather than because I'm weak in any absolute sense. I'm stronger than the average woman of my weight, but I want to be stronger than I am now. I discussed this a little bit with Tom (one of my trainers) today. We talked about the fact that now I'm into working on my cardio more than usual, which will make me a little leaner than I would be otherwise. I may find I want to have sort of cycles where I emphasize cardio more for a while and then lifting more for a while -- gaining a few pounds during the lifting cycle. Several of the guys do this sort of thing. (It's complicated by decisions about what weight class I want to compete in.) Another thing: In a few weeks I have my annual appointment with my endocrinologist. While I don't feel at all "hyper", he may think my synthroid dose needs to be lowered. If so, that might affect what my metabolism is doing. We shall see. Chris 262/141/ (145-150) |

The goal of maintenance is mentally very different, for me at least, than the goal of weight loss. I still want to see low low low but that's not really what I need. I am currently trying to have the same weight on the first of each month and stay within my goal range. I remember that from the time I was pregnant - I was so used to being a "loser", it was weird wanting the scales to go up (for the sake of the baby, of course :-)... and it was certainly weird *watching* it go up! (I just wish I was a bit more watchful postpartum g) I can completely understand it. It's a weird mental shift, isn't it? -- jmk in NC |
