Default Update So Far...

Spent Friday night at our church's Family Life Center(aka gym) with my wife's family, playing basketball and having some pizza, just a nice time of togetherness. My BIL & SIL couldn't believe the progress I've made in a month and a half! I really hadn't noticed too much change myself, some of my pants are a little looser and I've had to add a couple of notches to my belt(inward that is!).

We don't see them on a regular basis(usually once a month or so), so they could definitely tell that the diet and exercise is working! My wife and her family see me almost everyday so it'll be hard for the first several months I figure to really see a change.

Made me feel good that people can see a difference in only a month and a half.

Walking almost 2 miles a day(1/2 to 1 mile in the morning and 1 mile around noon - on the morning walks I like to mix it up and walk different routes).

I've also cut down my calorie intake to 2000 cal during the week and 2500 cal on the weekends, down from 3000 cal a day...

I also signed up for an informational seminar on the weight loss surgery - haven't made a definite decision, just looking for more information, but am not too sure I'll get any good info from that seminar. The flyer I got from my doctor had a before/after of a woman that weighed 236lbs before and 127lbs a year later. Would have been a more effective testimony(I guess) if the person was like 300lbs or 450lbs and lost however much in a year. Seemed like the person they chose had the surgery as more of a 'vanity' or 'cosmetic' reasons than for 'life-threatening/morbidly obese' reasons -I don't know her so I only gather that from the fact that she looked about 80lbs or so overweight(according to the gov't).

Anyway, just an update...

I am happy to see you, I was wondering where you went.

How much have you lost so far?

Not sure, SIL thought that it may be around 20-30lbs. Which sounds like a
lot for 1.5 months, but figuring I'm burning 6000 cal/day(according to
FitDay PC) and taking in only 2000-2500cal/day, that could be an accurate
figure. I bought 2 scales but am having a problem getting a reading, the
most accurate one(within 10 or so lbs - I think) was around 460lbs(in my
underwear), which may be close because when I went to my sleep doctor last
May I weighed in at 510lbs(-5 or so lbs for clothing/shoes). Because of my
body-type, its hard to do the measurement thing. I guess I need to call the
local hospital to see if they have a scale that can weigh me and if I could
use it once every couple weeks.

Good luck Matty, if you make visible progress in 1.5 months, there is
hope for you!!!

Thanks for the words of encouragement, its a tough road and it'll take time
but now that I have a support system in place(my MIL emails me everyday to
keep me accountable on my exercise and calorie intake), I feel good that
this time it's going to work...

Matty:

Most excellent! Walking and reducing calories is an awesome start. I
knew you could do it.

I also signed up for an informational seminar on the weight loss

surgery - haven't made a definite decision, just looking for more
information,

I started my current WOE after a consult for gastric bypass. Doc (who
has since left the hospital where I had hoped to have surgery) wanted
me to lose some weight before the surgery. He said not to worry about
losing so much that I wouldn't quality for the procedure -- most of
his patients struggle to lose five percent of their total weight
before surgery.

I've lost 85 pounds since then. I'm 20 pounds away from not being
classified as morbidly obese, thereby not qualifying for the surgery.
I'm glad not to have the surgery, although I think it an option for
some patients.

Again, way to go, Matty! I'm cheering for you.

Your progress is wonderful, Matty. You've taken a very sensible approach to weight loss and hopefully you can bypass the surgery. We have a member who started around your current weight and loss 200 pounds in a period of 12-14 months if I remember correctly. In case you haven't seen his website here it is http://www.geocities.com/neosmokey2k2/start
Smokey still pops in from time to time.
