"Chris B" wrote: Here is something that someone posted a few weeks back that was extremely helpful. I saved it for future reference and added my own disclaimer at the bottom. Thanks for reposting this, Chris. I must've missed it the first time around. Anyway, I'd like to add a couple of comments of my own to this... KETOGENIC (ATKINS') DIET ACCEPTABLE FOODS [SNIP] Fats & Oils: Olive Oil, Vegetable Oil, Canola Oil, Walnut Oil, Soybean Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Sesame Oil, Sunflower Oil, Safflower Oil, Butter I can agree with the olive oil and butter, but I did a lot of research over the summer that indicates that most modern, highly-processed-and- refined vegetable oils (corn, soybean, peanut, canola, etc.) are high in trans fats and should be avoided like the plague. Artificial Sweeteners: Sucralose (Splenda), Saccharin (Sweet N' Low) See below... Beverages: Filtered, Mineral, Spring, Tap Water, Club Soda, Heavy Cream, Decaf-Coffee, Decaf-Tea, Herb Tea, Lemon Juice Green tea is also thought to be preferable to the black variety. It should also be mentioned that one should drink at least 64 oz of water or other non-caloric drinks each day. UNACCEPTABLE FOODS AVOID SUGAR: I would say, "Avoid all foods or drinks *containing* sugar". Instead, use artificial sweeteners such as sucralose or saccharin. ....or better, yet, try to learn to like unsweetened drinks, as much as possible. I've discovered that I now prefer my iced tea unsweetened (much to my surprise!), and I'm working on developing a taste for unsweetened coffee and hot tea. [SNIP] AVOID CAFFEINE: Excessive caffeine has been shown to cause low blood sugar, which can make you crave sugar. Disclaimer: The writer of this message wishes to acknowledge that he will give-up caffeine when 6 VERY LARGE people come and remove it from his house... LOL! Me too! Stan |
