I view my VLCD as a ONE TIME experience as an alternative to surgery, not an annual ritual. As I've said before - hope is not a maintenance plan. If anything, your repeated attempts to baffle with bs posts are one of the reasons I've kept my reading of this group to a minimum lately. Thank you Nunya. I wondered about that when I read his post, because it just didn't sound right to me. Like you, I don't want this to be an annual thing. I did the Weight Watchers program, and it worked very well for me. Karen It's a great and sustainable plan. You sound like you're doing very well with it too! -- the volleyballchick |

I gained weight in '96 when I quit smoking and returned to WW again. I don't attend meetings currently but many of the lessons learned have helped me maintain at or near my goal weight. Beverly |

Now if we could just convince others that losing weight is a lifestyle change and not just a temporary change. You should come out of lurkdom more often. We seem to have somethings in common. It took me almost a year to lose my 40 pounds. I decided to make the lifestyle change after watching my mother pass away from health issues linked to obesity. Beverly Thanks Beverly. I guess we do have several things in common. My mom became diabetic, as a result of her weight. She had 2 heart attacks, and a couple of small strokes, then a major stroke which kept her paralysed for the last 3 years of her life. She was only 69 when she passed. That's still young. I don't want that kind of fate for myself, so am doing what I can to try to avoid it. Even exercise, which is my weak point. I started being more diligent about that when doc said I have the osteoporosis. I take the meds for it and eat all the high calcium foods too. I guess what I really want out of all of this is a quality of life in my senior years. I'm 49 right now. Karen I made my lifestyle change after my mother had open heart surgery and was diagnosed with cancer just a few months later. She was 61 when she passed away in '84. What medication do you take for the osteoporosis? I was diagnosed with osteopenia a few years ago. I started on Evista but my doctor changed me to Actonel a couple years ago. My latest bone scan indicates the hip and spine areas have improved but there hasn't been any change in the wrist area. I do a lot of cycling and that might have helped the hip and spine. Guess I should do more weight lifting Beverly |

Guess I should do more weight lifting Beverly I'm sorry about your mom. It does kind of give us a "wake up call" about the weight though. Right now I'm taking Fosamax once a week. I don't get another bone scan until October 2008. I'm starting to feel some of the side effects of the medicine though so I need to talk to my doc about that. It's great that you are showing improvement. Karen |

On Mar 11, 7:47 pm, "teachrmama" wrote: "Caleb" wrote in message snip Do you have other examples of my being rude to others? I'd be interested in instances in which I was rude without provocation. Actually, Caleb, your conversation with Neil concerned me, since I know he was responding out of concern for BTM. Yes, many do lose weight on very low calorie diets. But many also gain it back again. You posted the fact that most people lose weight 5 times before they lose it permanently. I'm sure I was just as concerned with BTM's possible health risks at cutting suddenly back to 1500 calories per day as Neil was. That's the issue he might have been looking ofr you to address. But you seem to want him to back down on the issue of his particular response if someone tells him they have been losing a pound a day. His reaction to that isn't really an issue at all, is it? BTM's health is what is important. Teachrmama -- I sure agree that BTM's health is most important. But when I offered mainstream (and supportive, I though) suggestions, Neil jumped on them with both boots, gratuitously insulting me in the process. Well, Caleb, I'm not going to argue with you about it. My perspective on weight loss this time around has been my health--and I have chosen not to adopt strategies that might damage my health. I hope BTM adopts a similar program, because health is just to precious to ignore. And, yes, I know that getting the weight off ameliorates a variety of health issues--but my bottom line has been "Can I live with this for the rest of my life?" My opinion may differ. But I do know that my health and fitness are now reflecting the wisdom of my choice 10 months from that terrible day when I found out how vulnerable I really was. I sincerely hope that the maintenance plan you select will allow you to maintain your loss. Teachrmama -- I hope it does but I'm not about to drive off a cliff if it doesn't. As you know there are absolutely no guarantees in life and there are many, many roads that can lead to a positive outcome -- or even to disastrous outcomes. (One can overdo exercise and seriously hurt oneself -- not do enough weight-bearing exercises and increase osteoporosis, etc., etc.) My progress and methods please my doctor greatly and I intend to continue to employ them. It is remarkable to me, though, that common sense calorie guidelines -- such as those outlined in the Merck Manual -- should engender such hostility from some people on this list! However, it is true what Lincoln said: "If I am right, then I am right. And if I am wrong, then a thousand angels breathing in my year, 'You are right!' will not make it so." For a lot of people, the Merck Manual guidelines -- and the ones I am using -- ARE right! Keep up your good work! Yours, Caleb |
