OT - Opinions about bleach as a cleanser
I would like to know what you all think of using common bleach to clean your
bathroom and kitchen areas. Do you think it is safe to use around your family? Do you feel it is environmentally safe? What about those dioxins and stuff? It kills mold and stuff, but personally, I hate the smell of the stuff. |

I would not use an industrial grade bleach at all, and I would not use a domestic bleach full strength. In any case, the surfaces where you use it should be thoroughly rinsed. |

Its weakly alkaline & will kill germs, cheap, doesnt smell and is a mild abrasive. gtoomey |

There are "spring rain" and "lemon" scented bleaches, even in the store brand varieties. Nothing kills off mold, mildew and fungus like bleach. For regular bathroom and kitchen germs, any household cleaner will do (pine-based is good, but check for actual pine content, some of them say "Pine" but have only the tiniest amount in the ingredients). Be sure to use a clean sponge, they are the real sources of germs - soak the sponge in diluted bleach and let dry, then use it to wipe down surfaces with a non-bleach cleaner. I use bleach in the toilet bowl and let it sit for awhile (so to speak) but I don't have dogs or small kids that might end up drinking from it. Bleach is fine when used with care but if you have doubts, you can use non-bleach cleaners for most jobs using the methods above. K. |

I don't understand the chemistry behind this, you would have too google it (or
someone will jump in & explain it,) but if you choose to clean with bleach mixing it too strong will lessen the germ-killing effects. Although it is the cheapest & best way to clean up germy stuff, I don't use it becuase it makes my lungs hurt. I used to order orange oil and make my own cleaning solutions, but my new favorite cleaners are Mr. Clean orange scented and the orange scented Soft Scrub. They don't clean quite as well as the do it yourself stuff, but they are a lot more convenientRobyn |

What makes you think that? bleach works by destroying the cell walls of organisms. With the cell walls dissolved, the organisms die. |
