Morningstar "Bacon" leaving microwave odor - any suggestions?
Actually if you used a cast iron skillet to cook bacon (med temp and
slowly), you'd end up with some "free" bacon grease flavoring to put on other dishes such as on your green beans. |

Alton Brown's trick of putting bacon on a rack and the rack in a pan, then putting the pan in a cold oven, then turning the oven on and to 400 degrees also works to render a lot of the bacon fat. This is the way I've been cooking my (nitrite-free) bacon lately, and I've been saving the grease/fat. -- Bob in CT |

And nitrites are not a problem if you have plenty of anti-oxydants (ie. vitamin C) in your diet. TC |

Morningstar "Bacon" leaving microwave odor - any suggestions?

There is really nothing wrong with your microwave smelling like bacon. Look at the ingredients in the strips and you will see a host of spices and flavors that are okay. Many delicious foods are intentionally flavored with bacon for that reason. So leave it alone and if it flavors your other foods, then consider it a good thing, not a bad thing. I think you misread the original post. She said she was cooking some kind of a vegetarian bacon product, not the real thing. The "pretend" stuff is what smells bad. Pat in TX No Pat, the vegetarian bacon product smells like bacon, only stronger. Can you imagine? But sometimes, like when you are cooking popcorn, you don't want the strong bacon smell. That is what she is complaining about. |
