HELP! question about foot cramps
I have posted this before. First of all make sure you're not dehydrated when
you before you get into the pool. After that it's potassium. To cure leg cramps: eat loads of Brazil Nuts to boost potassium, drink diet tonic water (Gin and Tonic!), or drink a herbal drink as recommended by Brenda Gray back in 1998 on this ng: "My son found advice in a book on herbs.... worked too. You make a tea using 4 cups of water, by simmering (only just) 1 level dessertspoon full each of marjoram, basil, oregano and parsley. (all dried measures) After 15 min. turn it off, and when cool strain. Keep in the fridge. Drink ½ to 1 cup morning and night (we add some boiling water to dilute it and warm it up) and that stops cramps. Morgan had a bad cramp the other night (just as he was answering the phone too ... poor guy!! - he had to call back and explain what the moans were!) and he hadn't taken any of his herbal tea for about a week ... he used to always be getting them." I prefer to throw the herbs on my salad / cooking. If you can't be bothered to buy a bottle of each of these herbs, the Italian Mix or Provencal Mix would have just about everything you need. The Queen and Cans and Jars say that too much Brazil Nuts wouldn't be very good for someone who's trying to lose weight as they're calorie laden. The Queen recommended spinach, cabbage, avocado, tuna, or yogurt instead. I had been mowing before I went swimming for about 3 hours, and i had plenty of water while doing this (not sure if its related but it seems to be since I do not seem to get them as often if I dont walk or mow first). They are sort of like a charley horse because the more I try to stretch out my arch the worse they get and then my calf will start up as well. I had to get out of the pool the other night after only 22 of my 35 laps completed because I was pretty much incapacitated by it. My friends magic answer was "Eat a banana or drink some gatorade before you swim you probably need potassium" but neither is low carb and I already take a vitamin and extra calcuim daily. What might be another solution that IS lower carb? |

HELP! question about foot cramps

"Pat" wrote in : I too am a swimmer and occasionally get foot cramps. Mine are usually caused by uneven push offs from the end of the lane while turning. I unfortunately am not a good enough swimmer to "turn" so to speak lol. Perhaps one of the swim team girls can help me with learning this though I will ask them on Monday. What kind of turn you're talking about? I wish I can do the tumble turn becoz I swim in a 20 yards (18 metre) pool, having to stop and turn is kind of annoying. I tried to learn it but I just can't becoz I float too damn well (yes, high BF I know). |

Please be careful with potassium! A pharmacist and my doctor have told me that if you take in too much, it may negatively affect your heart rhythm. this is true, but it can be taken effectively only when a person has muscle cramps and not taken the rest of the time. it shouldn't be a problem if used that way. still, it's a good idea to talk to your doctor or pharmacist about it. |

: It really scares me when I see people nonchalantly state that they take potassium, in the same manner they would say they take a multivitamin. Yes I am thinking the same as well. When there are so many natural (and cheaper) sources for potassium, I don't understand why people went straight for the pharmacist whenever they're told they need some minerals / vitamins. One of the major thing about low-carbing is to eat natural living food, you don't need the pharmacist all the time!!!! I agree with you two because I don't try to first medicate. I think the broccoli sounded better LOL -- Low Carb since 11/12/03 235ish/175/135 Goal for June: 165 for a loss of 10 lbs. |

news:kMSwc.62382$Ly.44637@attbi_s01: Broccoli is working for me. I hate broccoli, but as long as I pretend that I'm only eating it so I can have the Ranch dressing I'm dipping it in, I'm fine. If I don't eat the damn broccoli, the leg and foot cramps start up, and the restless legs are even worse at bedtime which only exacerbates the cramping and charley horses. I am going to try this, my plan does not allow bananas anyway as they are considered starchy and so they are a no no. I love raw veggies in ranch anyway. -- Low Carb since 11/12/03 235ish/175/135 Goal for June: 165 for a loss of 10 lbs. |

I did find some of that super water stuff im going to try that tonight. Supposedly it has the electrolytes without the sugars of the gatorade. -- Low Carb since 11/12/03 235ish/175/135 Goal for June: 165 for a loss of 10 lbs. |

HELP! question about foot cramps

When learning the flip turn, take a breath right before you get to the wall. Get closer to the wall that you think is perhaps warranted because when you tuck your head and do the somersault action, that will move you a little away from the wall in itself. It seems awkward at first, but it gets to be fun. It doesn't have to be done fast--you can do it in slow motion almost. You just have to actively tuck your head down toward the bottom of the pool and do your somersault. I shall try this tonight but last week my learning to butterfly was a disaster lol. I think that you have to have some special power to do this correctly or something. -- Low Carb since 11/12/03 235ish/175/135 Goal for June: 165 for a loss of 10 lbs. |

The worst part is to find time and space to practise. When I practise I always ended up feeling so self aware and I then I stop after a couple. It's also very trying on the arms, I once did 5 laps (in that 18 metre pool, how long is yours btw?) and I could really feel the effects when I got up next morning. I just can't quite coordinate my arms and legs. Thanks Pat for the advice for the turn. I'll try it sometime. |

You can add 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon (depending on the size of your large glasses and your needs) of Morton's Lite Salt to sugarfree Kool-Aid or Crystal Lite for the equivalent of sugarfree Gatorade. For some unknown reason, Morton No-salt (all potassium) costs 4 or 5 times as much as Morton Lite salt (half sodium, half potassium). I haven't needed any in quite some time on maintenance, but to the best of my memory, 1/4 tsp of the Lite salt has about 300mg potassium. A list of foods for supplementing potassium are on Lee's site. http://www.lowcarb.org/potash.html -- jamie ) "There's a seeker born every minute." |
