I have been religiously following the website for a month and trying to get
my questions answered by reading other people's discussions BUT I really need specific suggestions for me because I am at a loss (or not losing which is the problem) Here are the specifics: 5ft 3inch 46 year old female weighing 158 lbs and 140 is a comfortable weight for me I have been on Atkins for 4 weeks I have lost 1 lb!. The first 2 weeks I did induction and since the weight loss was pretty nonexistent I started to add one fruit a day because I felt it was unhealthy to not have fruit. For the first 2 weeks I developed terrible breath along with my ketosis and through your website it was suggested that I reduce the protein. so this is what I have been eating for the last two weeks Large Starbucks coffee with 1/4 cup whole milk and 2 equal Breakfast - 2 oz of smoked salmon and 1/2 cucumber and l Tablespoon cream cheese Lunch - 3oz tuna/T mayonnaise or 2 to 3 oz cheese and 3 cups lettuce and 1 to 2 T olive oil/T vinegar -Snack 1/2 cup cottage cheese/l fruit or 2 cup cooked vegetables/1 oz cheese Dinner 4 to 5 oz chicken or fish/Tablespoon mayo and 3 cups salad with T oil/T vinegar and 2 cups cooked vegetable Late night snack - 1/2 cup cottage cheese or 1 oz cheese or 2 T peanut butter and 1 fruit if I did not have it earlier I exercise 3 to 4 times a week - each time I do 30 to 40 minutes of cardio and 6 to 9 different weight training exercises Also, my urine says I am not in ketosis anymore. I started out eating probably twice the amount of protein and was not losing. I have increased the fat as you see above to about 5 to 6 Tablespoons a day of oil/mayo/peanut butter and this is not helping either. I feel great and it is very easy for me to stay in control but I want to lose weight. Why do you think the weight is not budging?? Any suggestions would be most appreciated Ellyn |

Does it really sound like I am eating too much or is that the suggestion
always made? Should I eat less of everything or just protein or just fat or just vegetables? Also, who is Lyle who gives such supportive advice about being a fat f---? *********************************************** -- JC Lyle's New Ultimate Diet "1. eat less you fat **** 2. exercise more you fat ****" "Edelman" wrote in message ... If you're not losing weight, you're eating too much. This is a truism. Drop
your carbs down to 20g a day or less and lower your overall calories until you're losing weight at a reasonable rate. The benefit of exercise in conjunction with this diet cannot be overstated. Lyle MacDonald is the author of a few books, including "The Ketogenic Diet". It's highly technical, but worth reading. -- JC Lyle's New Ultimate Diet "1. eat less you fat **** 2. exercise more you fat ****" "Edelman" wrote in message ... Also, who is Lyle who gives such supportive advice about being a fat f---? Lyle McDonald is a regular on misc.fitness.weights who has authored a few books concerning metabolism, and is generally well informed about metabolic issues. However, he has no sympathy for people who hide from the truth, and tends to hand out raw advice without the benefit of tact. I think this is intentional; it keeps him from being overwhelmed with questions ;-) You can read a few of Lyle's articles on Leptin I've got linked he http://www.delorie.com/health/ |

The whole point of following a diet is to FOLLOW it. Adding the fruit may not have been a good idea; there are other ways to get the nutrition you need via other foods. Also, you're eating 5 oz cheese each day; Atkins says 4 oz or less. The cheese alone is 570 kcals/day. so this is what I have been eating for the last two weeks Ok, count up the calories - every single one of them. 1 tablespoon cream cheese is 50 calories, for example. Use my LC food search if you want, it deducts fiber for you: http://www.delorie.com/health/ns/ Also keep track of fat, protein, and carbs. Use www.fitday.com if you want, or one of my food forms. Weigh food if you're not sure how much you're eating, or use measuring spoons instead of regular eating spoons. Once you know how many calories you're *really* getting, we can try to help you figure out if it's the right amount. It's highly variable, especially as you near your goal weight (as your body fights back more). I weigh about as much as you (but I'm 5'10") and I have to push calories very low to lose weight (7-8x). We normally recommend starting at 10-12x (12 calories per lb = 12 x 158 = 1900 kcals/day) and reducing it a little each week until you're losing 1-2 lbs/week or so. See http://www.geocities.com/jenny_the_bean/proteincalc.htm for help setting up an appropriate schedule of macronutrients. I exercise 3 to 4 times a week - each time I do 30 to 40 minutes of cardio and 6 to 9 different weight training exercises Count those aerobics as no more than 500 kcals each, more like 200-300 for the average aerobics. If you push net calories (food - aerobics) too low, your body may react by slowing its metabolism. If the net calories are too high, you just won't lose weight. You need to know how many calories you're eating. Keep up the weight training. Also, my urine says I am not in ketosis anymore. It's the fruit, me thinks. *Which* fruit? Berries are LC, bananas are not. |

Great post..
I found lots of helpful tidbits in it..even for myself thanks for sharing this info. Sometimes we slip into a pattern and forget some of the little things along the way that make it work well. ~Karen~ On 23 Sep 2003 23:56:01 -0400, DJ Delorie wrote: "Edelman" writes: The first 2 weeks I did induction and since the weight loss was pretty nonexistent I started to add one fruit a day because I felt it was unhealthy to not have fruit. Real cream would be better than milk too. Cutting back on the cheese and fruit might also help. At least limit the fruit to berries. Also are you noticing any change in the way your clothes fit? Sometimes you lose inches before the weight loss starts to register. BillJ |

You are STILL not doing Atkins!!! I don't know why you bother whining here
when you don't want to follow the advice given last time! Read the book and follow the plan!!! You're eating too much cheese. Check carb count of everything ! coffee has carbs, so does milk, cheeses, peanut butter, all the veggies/salads not to mention fruits! ditch the fruit, cut most of the cheese and eat some MEAT ! Anette "Edelman" I have been on Atkins for 4 weeks I have lost 1 lb!.
