VEGETARIAN LOW CARB??????
Hi, I am a vegetarian and I am trying to lose weight. I am trying my best to
go low carb however this is proving to be difficult since I don't want to eat meat of any type. What is a good structure for someone like me? Any ideas anyone? Thanks for any support. |

If you're OK with eating animal products that are not flesh such as cheeses and eggs it will be simpler but it's not impossible (if somewhat boring) for a purely vegan LC plan. I'd strongly recommend http://www.immuneweb.org/lowcarb/ as a good starting point. Cyndi Norman, whose site it is, used to be a regular here. She has a great website for the LC vegetarian, including recipes, menu suggestions and a wonderful table of protein sources including carb counts - a must for LC vegetarians since your protein sources will usually come with some carbs attached. Cyndi has severe multiple chemical sensitivities which really make life hard for her and this shows up in some parts of her website - but LC as a vegetarian has helped her to heal far more than she ever believed possible. Aramanth (PS - for those who remember Cyndi, I heard recently 'on the grapevine' (an acquaintance on a mailing list knows her ) that she's currently expecting her first baby, something she thought her ravaged body would never be able to do) |

It certainly worked for me! Thanks for posting her link. I, too, don't eat land animals and find it difficult to stick to a low carb plan. My problem (this go round) seems to be the inability to change my way of life (eating wise). I need to get back on Induction to clean out my system. That would be the first and perhaps most important step. ~Carol Ann |

While sufficient protein can be had from eggs, dairy, and soy, please be careful if you rely heavily on soy protein. Some people end up with hormonal problems due to the pseudo-hormones in soy interacting with normal estrogen hormones. |

I suppose lots of coconut milk could help get your fat levels up.

I LOVE JULIEANNE wrote: What is a good structure for someone like me? Any ideas anyone? Thanks for any support. I have been low carbing vegetarian (but eating dairy and eggs) for almost 2 years and have lost 100 lbs and have found low carb quite beneficial. I have been using the Atkins plan, which I just changed a little bit to fit vegetarian needs like eating more than the 3 c. of veggies as long as they were low carb and eating the soy meat in moderation during induction. Once you get started you can really think of a lot of great meal ideas for example - any ground beef dish substituted with ground soy meat. Other great things include soups, salads, egg bakes, spanakopita (spinach with feta), spaghetti squash or dreamfields if you want to eat that with a pasta recipe. Taco salads with or without 'meat'. Indian curries and dishes ( you could use Indian cheese) Chili rellenos (stuffed chilis with cheese) or other stuffed veggies. Possibilities are endless and you'll think of more once you get going. http://forum.lowcarber.org/forumdisplay.php?f=109 This is my personal favorite low carb vegetarian site. There are quite a few of well informed veggies there that can be of assistance. Good luck! |

It certainly worked for me! In Cyndi's case, the Multiple Chemical Sensitivities had devastated her body so badly that for a time there she literally could not walk across a room. She used her wheelchair pretty much all the time. She was very sick, very weak and something as simple as walking into a room where someone had been smoking or had used an air freshener spray could literally put her in bed for days. Now, although I understand she still needs the wheelchair sometimes, especially when outside her home, she is healthy enough to sustain a pregnancy. Going LC was the catalyst for her body to start healing, just as it was with mine. Thanks for posting her link. I, too, don't eat land animals and find it difficult to stick to a low carb plan. My problem (this go round) seems to be the inability to change my way of life (eating wise). I'm not vegetarian (most of my food allergies and intolerances centre around plants) but I've kept the link because many of my friends are. I like being able to point them to LC recipes when they say "But of course I couldn't follow that silly all-meat diet"! The table of vegetarian protein sources is useful, too. I need to get back on Induction to clean out my system. That would be the first and perhaps most important step. ~Carol Ann Perhaps having access to alternative recipes might inspire you to that end. I need to be able sleep, first and foremost. My insomnia is rearing it's ugly head again (I know why, but that's not helping me get beyond the stress that is murdering sleep for me) and nothing, including prescription medication is helping me get beyond it. I know that eventually I'll get beyond it, but right now I'm doing it tough. I'm not eating at all well. I'm alternating between no interest in food at all and wanting to stuff my face with carbs - especially today after making 11 dozen Sausage Rolls (puff pastry filled with bulk sausage, vegetable and spice mix) for the school Christmas Parties for each of my girls. This is the last week of the school year for them - from Monday they will be on the long Summer break and not go back to school until the end of January. Tomorrow is report card and 2005 class placement day which is always exciting. They love school, and their teachers have nothing but praise for them when I go to the classrooms. Ah well. This too shall pass. Aramanth |
