Atkins Protein Shake .. 80 cal from FAT?
Morning,
I've gained back some 60 pounds over the last couple years. I was down to 220 from 280 two years ago (39yo male, 6'2). I think my suggested is around $200, but I look good at 200 with thick arms and legs. Changed jobs recently, started working out and while at for convenience started drinking protein shakes in the morning on the way in place of a fatty breakfast. Tried a few shakes, and settled on the Atkins Advantage brand for taste, price (about $1.75 a can) and that it kept me from not being hungry until 1pm. Anyways, was surprised to see that of the 160cal from the shake, 80cal are from Fat. 2 grams of Carb. 2g of Saturated Fat. Comparing this to Slimfast, 50 cal from fat, but 28g of Carb. Does 80 cal from fat seem high? The shake does keep me satisfied a little too well and the pounds have not been dropping, though I do look like I'm losing the gut. So I was a little suspicious. Also does anybody know of any good (tasty , inexpensive, safe and effective) protein shakes or shake formulas? Is $1.70 for a 325ml can reasonable? That's roughly $50 a month. It's certainly cheaper than eating breakfast. |

Yeah, somebody else. Others: As for if I prefer carbs over fats. I know my body does respond well to low carb, though the sound of a high fat diet does sound risky. I would imagine 40g calories from fat is likely not that big of a deal. For me I think low carb mornings for sure works very well. And I do also enjoy a nice juicy fat marbleized rib eye once a week. I think it's pretty easy to identify what's really very wrong with most overweight people's diets .. and it's likely not the little things like if the protein shake is geared more toward low carb or not.. But I hear you. Thanks. |

But I hear you. Thanks. 40 cal from fat for a breakfast is not high, even for a low-fat diet. If you ate 40 cal from fat for each of 3 meals plus a snack, that is only 160 cal. from fat, which for a 2500 cal/day diet puts you at 6.4% fat, which is a VERY LOW fat diet and nearly impossible to achieve. I suspect you are eating well over 20% fat if you follow anything from Atkins. I eat a double portion of oats for breakfast and get 54 cal. from fat in that. Of course there is a lot of food in two servings of oats and I couldn't replace that with a can of protein drink and feel like I had eaten much, but the 40 cal. from fat seems fine. In fact, oatmeal is listed as low fat and a serving has 25 cal. from fat. The thing is, you can consume a lot of fat in a hurry if you don't watch carefully. dkw |

Fat in foods (with the exception of trans fat) is not the enemy. It's combining high fat and high carb that's unhealthy. What's that, like for instance 60% fat and 60% carbs? Oops, that's more than 100%. I get it, you must be talking about (doh) overeating. |

The thing is, you can consume a lot of fat in a hurry if you don't watch carefully. dkw Actually, a high dietary fat intake is self regulating, and may even lead to nausea, when done to excess. The big exception is when carbohydrates are added to the fat. The opportunity to overeat then becomes huge. Give a man a stack of steaks and he will stop eating rather quickly. Give a man a stack of his favorite full sugar ice cream and he may eat the whole stack over some hours. |
