New to this forum, but am in desperate need of a support group!
Is this the best group online for this?
I seemed to have mysteriously gained 40 pounds over the last few months
and need desperately to take it (and more) off!
Please help!

Sheila,
Yes. I suggest that you have a complete physical exam to rule in or out
any medical reasons for the gain in weight. I know that hypothyroidism can
cause weight gain. There may be other medical problems that can cause you
to gain weight. Ask the doctor that does the physical exam whether or not
it is safe for you to exercise. If so, start an exercise program and buy a
book related to diet. I seem to recall reading that the South Beach Diet
is an excellent diet plan. I believe there was a best selling book about
that diet plan. Do not buy the book related to the high protein diet. That
diet plan could do more harm than good. Download this report related to
hypothyroidism and see if you have the symptoms mentioned in this report:

When you say "mysteriously" do you really mean it? If so, I agree that
you need to get a checkup to rule out medical causes. If you say
"mysteriously" as in "I don't know how it happened but I have been eating
more than usual and gained weight" then perhaps this group can help.
Most folks in this group are believers the "eat less and exercise" diet,
just so you know.

A first step might be to describe yourself, age, wt, goals etc.
The second is to write down everything you eat for a period of time, like
a week.

OH...I know the mystery. Boxes of macaroons and PB@J sandwiches every
night while my husband was in Afghanistan. I never bothered to weigh
myself and honestly thought I was running around the same. I did start
to notice, however, that even my 'fat' clothes were fitting tight.

I'm 5'7 and now.....ouch......277! Exercise is a problem as I have been
diagnosed with LUPUS and severe rheumatoid arthritis (which is what
caused all the weight gain in the beginning. That, and four children.)

I have to take large quantities of morphine daily to deal with chronic
pain. I've thought of perhaps trying some yoga or a water therapy course.

I was in the army for 10 years and when I left I weighed 145 pds and ran
10 kilometres daily. So, the above is a huge shock!

Please help me!

I just know I can't do this alone and I"m afraid.

Self medication with food can be a problem. Do you feel that you can
handle the issues in your life by yourself or is there some way you can
get some therapy? You are posting from a canadian domain but that covers
a lot of territory. I don't know what the availability of help is.
However, exercise is not the most important part of losing weight. It
takes your 10km run to make up for a couple of pb sandwiches and a glass
of milk.

So if you can't exercise (although the water aerobics or the deal where
you walk/run in the water with a flotation aid could be useful) you can
still do it by reducing your food intake. An emphasis on fruit,
vegetables, whole grains, moderately low fat, not too much meat is the
general recommendation, although there are alternative approaches.

Sheila, where did you go?

Are you ready to figure out how to stop being fat? Because we can help
you. But not until the person in your mirror is ready to help you, too.
