Default Environmental fears for GM crops, rape seed, sugar beets

I seem to remember the modified rape seed being grown in Canada (for Canola
oil) had some drift to neighboring crops due to winds spreading seeds to a
neighboring farmer. The company brought suit, if I remember correctly,
against the farmer for "stealing" the modified seeds. The rape seed was
engineered so that herbicides like Round Up could be sprayed to kill weeds
and have the crop survive it.
I think a countersuit or suit is in order if those growing these genetically
modified crops can't prevent the contamination spreading to conventional and
organic grown crops of neighboring farmers.
The biotech community is, of course, against setting up a fund to compensate
the farmers that they might happen to contaminate.

Carol;

Thanks for posting a link to a very beautiful essay.

My BF has a camp in a farming community and I am learning about their trials
and tribulations. I am so torn about so many issues and am not educated
enough to have my own opinion. Meanwhile, reading the opinions of others
really makes me think.

I do know this.... Domestic policy makes an enormous impact on what is
grown and how it is grown and that most farmers are mortgaged to the hilt.
Alas, it is not the guy on the combine who makes decisions about what he
will grow and how when his choices are to go bankrupt or please a loan
officer.

I am cynical tonight. Not enough sleep. Too sleepy to go to bed.
