Default Body fat percentage (Tanita scale)

Dear group

I recieved a Tanita Body fat monitor scale yesterday. I have earlier tried
various calculations methods for determining body fat percentage by
measureming specific body parts.

I had come to the idea that it would be around 50 something since I am 329
lbs and a little over 6 feet tall. But the quite expensive Tanita scale says
that I am between 32 and 35 percent body fat.

I have been biking all sommer and been to the gym 3-4 times a week for about
2 months. But I dont belive that this could have made such a difference in
my bodyfat percentage. I have lost about 33lbs and dont know the exact
result based on the fact that I haven't owned a scale before now. Total
water percentage is around 49%.

Have any of you expierienced the same thing or what can be the the cause of
this error or should I believe the result?

Thanx in advance
Steffen

Someone else commented on these types of scales just recentl;y.. they seemed
to think it was *off* too. I truly don't believe there is any really
accurate way of measuring body fat except for the float tank method..

Steffen,

I think your scale may need servicing... but how tall are you exactly
and what is your waist measurement?

Putting in 6'1" and 329 pounds at
http://www.stevenscreek.com/goodies/pi.shtml, I get 62.5% body fat,
which is a lot more than 32-35% from your scale.... but this doesn't
account for what may be muscle gain in your case. Muscle does weigh
more than fat. Are you 329 now with your 33 pound loss?

I'm hoping your scale is accurate, because I have some pending bids on
eBay for a Tanita body fat monitor/scale ;-)

In the interest of sharing, I'm 5'8", 196 pounds and my waist is 36",
making me 39-43% fat depending on the calculator I use. One told me it
was 17.8% based on my waist but I know that is soooo wrong heheh! I
wish!

Hi Sarah

I am not sure if it needs service, but maybe you're right. I got it from
Germany and it was delivered by mail (Live in denmark).

I am around 329 after loosing the 33 pounds. I am not that good at the
american measurements standards so I really do not know my exact hight and
waist.

Otherwise I really like the scale it looks cool and works professionally.

Tomorrow a friend will bring his scale and we will compare the results so I
can see if anything is wrong with my new scale or if it is just me that has
a lower fat percentage than I thought.

but probably not ;-)

Maybe one just has to track the readings and notice the progress in this
number instead of thinking it should be 45 or something. One way or another
two or in my case tree numbers can perhaps give some sort of view on total
progress.

Take care

Steffen

Just for a comparison .. there is a site that will give you body fat and
lean muscle mass %ages

http://www.mybodycomp.com - registration is free .. I use it, and I'm
not sure of the accuracy as I am still trying to get calliper
measurements. BUT, if that is what you are going to use each time you
measure, then it'll do the job ..

I have a taylor bf scale and the measurement I get from mine and the
measurement I get from this site are very very close.

Heh! I had that problem too... I held it across my front and then
doubled it plus 2 inches for the edges of my arms ;-)

Now the results, eeek!

The problem is that Atkin's type diets deplenish the body of glycogen,
and ultimately water.. these handheld units send a current through
the body and measure the resistance -- it's very dependant on current
hydration level.. No doubt these things are calibrated using the
standard population (i.e., not low-carb, and not dieting), so I doubt
they will work well at all, so a ketogenic diet has a diuretic effect.
You could try carbing up for a day or two and testing it again, but
then you lose those two days..

TY .. heh heh

very carefully

you kind of "wear" it like a shawl, scarf type thing (over the shoulder
type top???) (bah .. easier to do than say), pretend like it joins in
the front, do a normal exhale and mark the tape end with your finger
edge.
