I have been to therapy. I received the same type of frivolous answer from
the therapist.

Then, you have had a bad therapist. A good therapist won't push method X on
you (behavioural, cognitive, Freudian, whatever). A good therapist will
listen to you, and then think in his head "I know of appraches A, B, C and
D, what's the perfect mix to help this person". For instance, behavioural
therapy (the tips Luna posted) is often part of the mix, because it often
provides quick relief that allows for enough peace of mind to work on the
therapy. But pure behavioural tends to be short lived.
That's why a good therapist needs to be *specialized* in eating disorders,
otherwise he just doesn't have the skills to be fluent in that kind of
multi-therapy process. And yes, good therapists I damn rare, perhaps even
more so than good doctors. And even if you find a good one, you have to find
a perfect fit with your own personnality. But it's still worth trying.

I have this problem, too. I'm sorry that you share this problem with me,
Jo-Ann, but it's also comforting to know that it's not just me. My HMO
never did get back to me when I phoned them for pre-approval to see the
only therapist specializing in eating disorders in southern Minnesota. I'm
going to write a formal request, and see where that gets me.

No - you can't do that if you are a compulsive overeater. 1 bite and you
will eat it all till it's all gone. That's me anyway. I get the idea that if
i eat it all it will be all gone and no more temptation. SO i become the
human garbage disposal.

You must get rid of the tempting items. If nuts are legal in small quantity
but you are losing control then No more nuts.

Do you drink diet soda with aspertame? I found I had to give it up - it was
giving me cravings liek crazy.

The best way to get rid of carb cravings is to get rid of foods that provoke
an insulin spike. For many of us that means carbohydrates. For some of us,
it may be both carbs and too much protein.

That means that to get a handle on hunger, you might have to stop eating any
of the supposed "low carb" foods you see at the store, because many of them
are full of sugar alcohols which can raise blood sugar for many of us.

Not only that, but I've found that a few grams of sugar alcohol will cause
me to be hungry for literally hours after eating the food that contains
them, and the hunger is way out of proportion to their actual food value. I
have had to completely eliminate even the low carb ice cream, which is kind
to my blood sugar, because I don't want to deal with the subsequent hunger.
Even the sugar free breath mints give me hours of cravings.

Not everyone has this reaction, but if you are low carbing and still
obsessing about food, cutting the sugar alcohols might be a very good place
to start.

Not meaning to mock the OP, but when I was skimming the subject lines just
now I read the typo as "carb crabbings" and thought, yeah, dang it, I
identify with that.

Right now I'm crabby because I would love nothing more than some toasted
and buttered home-baked sourdough bread topped with some home-made
strawberry jam with my coffee this morning. Not a craving, just a
crabbing ;-)

Hi

Newbie here. Not a low-carber, but one with some ideas might help. Not
that we haven't thought of them all and abused them, at one time or
diet or other. : )

I found it was like smoking and not smoking. One has a cigarette while
doing certain things. Same with food. I've stopped eating while..(fill
in the blank).

I eat only at the table, set properly and beautifully: not at the
computer, not at the fridge, and not while reading or... . The only
time I allow myself to eat differently is in the park after my walk, or
at the library while doing research, or in a work site lunch room. Then
I take my lunch outside or into the lunch area.

I found this very hard to do at first. Gets easier with practise. I
also follow-up with Luna's suggestions. Fresh mouth, lipstick.
I'm so kewl...
