I've had more MRI's than I want to count. I'm sure that if they did one
on my lower back they would probably discover that the degraded disk in
my lumbar region has worsened, but I frankly don't want to know about
it. I am controlling my pain with diet, large amounts of very careful
appropriate exercise, and a very small amount of one last medication
that sometimes helps when nothing else does. I'm not interested in
finding out that I need surgery. I've heard too many stories of
surgeries that didn't really fix the problem. Besides, every time I let
a doctor fiddle with my back (or face, or neck) things get worse. I
have a 13 year litany of problems that spiralled out of control as a
result of a whole string of bad medical/chiropractic/dental
interventions. They really don't know what they're doing, and I'm not
letting them experiment on me any more.

By the way, I realize this is a YMMV thing. I hope your mother finds
relief. Sometimes surgery really is called for, and you're also right
about drug abuse. Sometimes chronic pain can lead to terrible
dependency on pain-killers. I've avoided that myself, but the warning
is a valid one.

know that's
how it's perceived by many people in the medical profession. Besides,
it doesn't explain anything. It's just a garbage term for pain that the
doctors can't figure out how to deal with. I've also stopped trying to
get the doctors to do anything about my pain. It's beyond their
abilities. Even with the Dx of fibromyalgia and a sympathetic doctor, I
was miserable on the drugs they recommended. So, I've dropped the Dx
and I go it alone. BRBR

I have two items about that:

For the past few years, my mother has been thinking that she has fibromyalgia,
suffering with the pain, sleeplessness, depression and fatigue, etc. She
recently went to a neurologist who found that she may have a disc problem in
her lower back, which may account for the pains that she gets in her legs. She
is waiting to hear about the MRI she had yesterday, but is hopeful that there
may be a tangible diagnosis.

Secondly, I know of a woman with fibromyalgia who has been institutionalized
after it was found that she had become dependent on many different painkillers.
She had amassed 26 different prescriptions from all the different doctors she
had been to. She was not getting out of bed and was terribly depressed. That
is all I know of that situation, but it is a cautionary tale about drugs and
the lack of answers about this condition.

Hi Sunshyne,

I'm glad you are doing this. I am a graphic designer, so I am always making
stuff. When a project is going well, it is very fulfilling.

I recently started going to figure drawing sessions, you pay for each session
and it is without an instructor. I invited my 86 year old artist neighbor to
go with. She has been sick with cancer and it all looked very grim for her,
but she is doing well (they even took away her hospice nurse). I thought the
figure drawing would be a nice thing for her. She just loves it and makes sure
she goes even when I'm not able to. I think that creating is theraputic, but
even more important, it is stimulating, it is exercise, it is good for your
head.

I hope you enjoy your classes.

I'm sorry you and Sunshyne, and all the other posters here are having such a
difficult time. I can certainly understand the frustration with the fiddlings
of doctors. Until they know what the heck this syndrome is, they are indeed
experimenting.

I doubt that my mother will opt for surgery. She says the doctor she went to
is partial to non surgical treatments. I think she really just wants some kind
of answer to the mystery, as do all of you. Also, she is very cautious about
pain medication and sleeping pills, rarely takes them.

I've been encouraging her to go to a local pool that has a pain management
program (warm pool with aquatic exercises). She procrastinates, but may
finally pull it together and try it out. I think it was Lurker who mentioned
that she gets relief from her aquacise program. I meant to ask her about it,
but lost her post.

BTW, my mother has had terrible problems with Crohn's disease, though it is in
remission, with occasional flareups. It is interesting that so many people
with fibromyalgia also have autoimmune problems.

Thanks Rog. Its a great feeling.

Hate to ask. If you read this JC, how is school and teaching this year?

Well, didn't fall asleep in class. Took better notes, highlighted more stuff.
Going to study tonight. The graphic teacher said to practice some doodling
too.Whenever we feel like it. So doing that too. Working on abstract drawings.
It opens up the creative side of the brain more so. Like ink blots sorta.

Just wanted to add. I was thinking to myself earlier today. I don't think I
coulda hacked going back to school. If I had that extra freaking 70 pounds of
weight on me. Its easier to walk, bend my knees. I am not out of breath as
much. I can keep up. I started out on the diet in a size 26-28. I can easily
wear a size 16 now.

The classmates, are so much younger than me. Some out of HS. Heck, I got a son
graduating this year. Anyways, I had them guessing my age, before I told them.
They guessed 30-32 years old. I did look my age, if not older before Atkins. I
am 38. That was a good feeling.. Them thinking I was younger than the 38. My
hair is shinier, my skin has cleared up, no more rahses that are embarrassing,
my nails look better too.
