Default Incredibly OT - The Historian at the CJA Awards

Hi, pardon the offtopic post, but I wanted to share with my friends the
results of the Chess Journalists of America awards in Chicago:

Best Web-based Book Review:

First Place:
"Half a Bitch is Better Than None"
http://correspondencechess.com/campb...es/a060214.htm

"Ms. Shahade poses in the cover photo as, what I gather, is supposed to
be what my grandparents might have called a "floozie," dressed in pink,
wearing a pink pageboy wig. What's more, she's appropriated the word
"bitch" in a gesture at feminist empowerment, wrenching it from its
status as a derogatory slur at women, and emblazoning it in her book's
title."

"It's fair comment to wonder why in a book with an alleged feminist
viewpoint so many of the interviews and anecdotes are burdened with
fencepost gossip about clothes, food, and what passes for music among
the youth of today.... the book sadly perpetuates the very sexist,
woman-as-airhead stereotype it intends to subvert."

Best Historical Article:

Honorable Mention:
"'The Queen of Chess': The Correspondence Chess of Ellen Gilbert"
http://correspondencechess.com/campb...es/a051107.htm

"It used to be said that a woman's name should show up in a newspaper
only three times in her life; namely, when she is born, when she
marries, and when she dies. No female chess player ever violated that
rule more spectacularly than Mrs. John W. Gilbert, the nineteenth
century queen of correspondence chess...."

You're too modest -- had to go look at these to determine that you
wrote them both. Congratulations! (even though I have no interest in
chess :-))
