On day two of induction -- have a couple questions
I started Atkins on Monday, and I have a couple questions about the
'symptoms' of the intial stage of switching from a high carb to low carb way of eating. 1) I don't recall it being mentioned in the Atkins book, but I've been viraciously hungry today, and part of yesterday. Is this normal during this transitional period? Does it eventually subside? It feels like my body is digesting my food extremely fast. 2) For those that have experienced the blood sugar fluctuations after eating meals and felt the drowsyness/cloudyness of the mind/etc., did it feel like that on a constant basis for the first few days after switching your diet? If so, how long did it last for you? In the Atkins book it does mention that I should expect to not feel well during the first few days, but it made it sound more like I should be experiencing symptoms of withdrawl -- not blood sugar fluctuations. TIA. -Isaac |

On day two of induction -- have a couple questions
I found that I felt more full after I ate. The meat I ate seemed to keep me
fuller for a longer period of time. "Isaac" wrote in message ... 1) ...I've been
viraciously hungry today, and part of yesterday. Is this normal during this transitional period? I found the first few days of induction pretty difficult... It wasn't so much that I was hungry, but I was CRAVING carb food something awful. I may even have had a few tummy rumbles when I thought about foods I craved and couldn't have. This subsided as the week went on. If you are eating enough protein and fats, you shouldn't get hunger pangs between meals. Maybe increase those food types a bit this first week. The protein takes a long time to digest, so you have a full feeling lots longer than with carbs. Good luck, Anne |

1) I don't recall it being mentioned in the Atkins book, but I've been viraciously hungry today, and part of yesterday. Happened to me too. I remember being so hungry that I went down to the mall in the basement of my office building, almost trance-like frantically searching for snacks until I found a place that was selling some beef jerky. And I'm glad that I found that place because there were so many places selling Twinkies and I was this close to just buying one of those instead. This was gone by the first week. 2) For those that have experienced the blood sugar fluctuations after eating meals and felt the drowsyness/cloudyness of the mind/etc., did it feel like that on a constant basis for the first few days after switching your diet? I had two days of pretty constant brain cloudiness and lightheadedness. Like being on too much cold medicine or something. On day two of induction -- have a couple questions
I was extremely hungry for the first week or so. Slightly less so for the
next couple weeks. However it wasn't until I switched to OWL in the 4th week that the hunger totally disappeared between meals. Also I never experienced the energy surge that many report. Hang in there. 215/173/145 "Isaac" wrote in message ... I've been on since april 2003 (no cheats yet!) and have only gotten hungry a few times, always after eating one of the "net carbs" bars. Maybe there are enough carbs in them to trigger something in my system. "Isaac" wrote in message ... I became intensely aware of the presence or absence of food in my system, and it was important to eat enough. A trick I learned here though was when I thought I was hungry, I would drink a 16 oz glass of water. Then I would force myself to wait an hour. If I was still hungry, I would have something like cheese. Just mind tricks, but they work. -- Wayne Crannell Atkins+ 10/27/01 Maintenance 10/1/02 250/138 |

On day two of induction -- have a couple questions
On Tue, 18 Nov 2003 18:29:35 -0800, "Isaac"
announced in front of God and everybody: 1) I don't recall it being mentioned in the Atkins book, but I've been viraciously hungry today, and part of yesterday. Is this normal during this transitional period? Does it eventually subside? It feels like my body is digesting my food extremely fast. It could be any a number of things. It could be that you're experiencing genuine hunger more acutely because, when you were eating too many carbs, your up-and-down blood sugar gave you carb cravings rather than let you feel real hunger. It could also be that what you're feeling actually *is* carb cravings, which you've come to associate with genuine hunger -- I know that I was fascinated to discover that there's a real difference for me between Wonky Blood Sugar "hunger" and real, I Need Food for Sustenance hunger. It could also be that, this being Day Two, your body's burning through your fat-and-protein meals for energy and then going to the fat reserves -- so you're feeling intense hunger because that's the body/brain's natural survival response to burning stored fat. Eventually you should start experiencing a dramatic reduction in appetite. Some people -- this happens to me on occasion -- have to even remind themselves to eat regularly, to keep their metabolism rockin' along. I'm one of the rare ones that felt great almost as soon as I started Atkins. Yeah, I had a serious carb withdrawal -- but I also had more energy and my mental acuity was sharper from the second day. But then, I was eating a LOT of crap carbs before I switched, and what with my mood swings, muscle aches and fatigue, it couldn't have helped but get better than that. I did have a bit of a headache for a couple of days, I'll grant that. Make sure you take the recommended vitamins -- Chromium is helpful, I find, for cravings -- and drink a metric buttload of water. You'll be great. Good luck -- and good for you! Dawn -- REVIEW: "Elf" http://www.portlandtribune.com/archview.cgi?id=21272 DAILY DOSE OF HUMDRUM: http://www.livejournal.com/users/dtaylor |
