I know there are some exceptions, but overall I think USENET is dying.

I'm not sure why, but I suspect some ISPs no longer provide it, and there
has been a return of spam to USENET. Spam was never really gone, but I see
much more than a few years ago -and much less spam than about, maybe, 5
years ago.

Dying the way broadcast TV is dying. It is growing but the
rate is tiny compared to competing media.

It was designed by hobbiests so it's hard to bill for it. There
are NSPs that are in the business but most are low budget.

Go back in time and more news admins were actively involved.
That matters a lot - They killed accounts, dropped feeds, changed
filters.

The reason usenet is fading away is that new users think the web and
email is all there is to the Internet and ISP's don't do much to sell
usenet to new users.

UseNet has little PR. Maybe the most important source of new posters
is search engines. Google and Yahoo don't include UseNet archives
in most searches.

But I think there's a different reason UseNet gradually fades - So
many folks I've corresponded with left because of trolls and will
never come back. Plus some who leave to spew attacks. Few care
about killfiles and such, they just want their forum to work and
"work"
includes not showing them articles by trolls. Unmoderated groups
may be UseNet's biggest strength but they also allow the free speech
equivalent of shouting fire/rape and that sort of abuse drives away
many. Trolls pretend to not know the difference between free and
unlimited speech.

I think a lot of ISPs still provide it, but don't promote it
whatsoever. And therefore, folks newer to the internet have not even
heard of Usenet. My ISP had to be asked, no news server info was
available from their website, but when I called, it was available. I'm
guessing they just didn't get a lot of folks asking. But then, I'm in
the boonies.

Many folks have just migrated to moderated forums. I must admit, I
tend to like the forum format a bit more myself these days. Too much
spam on the newsgroups, so the noise to info ratio is too large.

I like to check by, since I met my husband on the group. I think he
uses Usenet more than I do these days though.
