Default Obesity, drug use turned fight fatal

Post staff reporters

The struggle with six Cincinnati police officers early Sunday morning
killed Nathaniel Jones, Hamilton County Coroner Dr. Carl Parrott Jr. said
Wednesday, but Jones' obesity, heart disease and drug intoxication were
contributing factors.
The fight outside a North Avondale White Castle caused Jones to have a
"fight or flight" reaction, which led to cardiac dysrhythmia, or changes in
the way his heart was beating. Parrott said.

Parrott said Jones' death will be ruled a homicide, but he cautioned that
does not imply malicious intent. "This word should not be interpreted as
implying inappropriate behavior or the use of excessive force by police,"
Parrott said.

Ohio law specifies that any time a death involves the purposeful act of
another person or persons, it must be ruled a homicide.

Cardiac dysrhythmia will be listed as Jones' immediate cause of death on
his death certificate.

"Absent any one of the contributing factors, Mr. Jones' odds of surviving
the struggle would have been increased," Parrott said. "Absent all of them,
he would have been expected to survive."

Parrott made his announcement to the media, he said, because of the
public's "legitimate need to know" the information concerning Jones'
controversial death.

"The struggle is the primary way," Parrott said. "Absent the struggle, Mr.
Jones presumably would have gone on his intoxicated way."

Jones, who weighed 350 pounds, had an enlarged, hypertensive heart and a
history of hypertensive heart disease, Parrott said. He added: "Absent the
struggle, however, Mr. Jones would not have died at that precise moment in
time, and the struggle therefore is the primary cause of death."

The 41-year-old Northside man had intoxicating levels of cocaine and
phencyclidine -- also called PCP or "angel dust" -- in his system. Parrott
said Jones' blood showed 0.299 mg/l of cocaine and 0.141 mg/l of angel dust
in his blood. Tests indicated he had taken cocaine about three hours before
his death and PCP at least five hours before his death.

Parrott also said Jones had a large amount of methanol in his system --
30.4 milligrams per deciliter -- but that he could not determine if it had
been swallowed or inhaled, or when it had been consumed. Methanol is a
chemical found in embalming fluid and can be used with PCP to spike
home-rolled or commercial cigarettes by dipping them in the liquid.

Three cigarettes containing PCP were found in Jones' car, along with
one-third of a gram of powder cocaine, Parrott said. Toxicologists could
not determine if the cigarettes had also been dipped in methanol.

Parrott said he has never seen a case in Cincinnati of someone inhaling
methanol from a coated cigarette but that he has heard it happens often in
the Cleveland area.

The coroner said the autopsy did not show that any of Jones' internal
organs had been damaged by the beating with police nightsticks. He also
said the nightstick injuries were confined to Jones' lower body.

Those scrapes and bruises "were hurtful but not necessarily harmful,"
Parrott said.

Parrott said he didn't find it unusual -- and wasn't worried -- that the
lawyer for Nathaniel Jones' family wants an independent autopsy. "Previous
cases have confirmed our findings," Parrott said, noting this wasn't the
first time a second autopsy has been requested in a high-profile case.

That lawyer, Ken Lawson, said he didn't care about Parrott's opinion,
though, because the coroner's office has botched so many cases it has lost
credibility. "It is hard for me to believe, and I say this with all due
respect, anything that comes out of (Parrott's) office," Lawson said.

Shortly after Parrott's findings, Lawson and Jones' family took possession
of the body and shipped it to Indianapolis, where an independent autopsy
will be conducted.

"I don't trust what they're saying," Lawson said of the coroner's findings,
including that Jones used cocaine and PCP three to five hours before he
died.

"We don't lie to anybody knowingly," Parrott countered.

Excessively fat women look ugly. It is impractical to try and have sex when
