The Holidays
Thought it might be time for a legit post--it seems we're being overrun
by trolls of late, when I'd rather be overrun by reindeer. My lil' sis (I have four) is coming home from Alaska next week, toting along her hubby and her baby boy, who's now a year old. It'll be a short visit for my BIL--he's being shipped out next month. Sis will live with my mom until he comes home. Of course, their homecoming will bring about a new round of festivities, aside from those traditional reasons we use to overindulge. To keep myself from travelling off the tracks, I wrote down a list of goals for myself in regards to eating, drinking, and exercising, but...well...we'll see if I can stick to it. What strategies will you all be using to combat holiday weight gain? Amy |

Well, spending 10 days in Dayton is one way to avoid holiday
festivities :-). Though the office here is having some sort of holiday get-together tomorrow after work and our audit team is invited. Seriously, my strategy is to have some splurge meals but be good the rest of the time, and try to keep up with my exercise as much as travel schedules permit. I doubt I will gain much, but if I do I'll lose it again :-). Chris |

Leafing through alt.support.diet, I read A Ross's message of 07 Dec 2004:
What strategies will you all be using to combat holiday weight gain? Keep running. Phil M. -- "What counts in battle is what you do once the pain sets in." -John Short, South African coach. |

I especially love the trolls answering trolls just for attention. I probably won't do anything special during the holidays to maintain. There will be a couple office parties, a church dinner, 50th wedding anniversary celebration for an aunt and uncle and a wild-game dinner in addition to Christmas day at my house. I'll just try to eat sensibly and try to keep exercising during the holidays. Beverly 177 / 142 / ~140 |

Trying to get my accountability partner to understand that I have to allow a little treat now and again to avoid a potential 'binge attack'. Had some of those roasted cinnamon almonds they sell at the mall every year at Christmas time the other day. Stayed in control and under calories, just needed a taste of that holiday treat(too expensive to potentially binge on anyway)... Matty 481/364/250 First mini-goal achieved: 104lbs lost 10/24/04 |

What strategies will you all be using to combat holiday weight gain? Amy I am so sick of buying food at today's grocery prices then throwing out 1/3 of all the fresh foods I buy because we dont' eat them before they go bad. I'm on a boycott! I'm sick of throwing my money away. Same here. It's very hard to shop for only two people and try to get "fresh" produce when you live in the middle of nowhere. Are tomatoes more than $5/lb anywhere else? It is getting almost to the point where it will be cheaper to get the salad with grilled chicken breast on top at a restaurant than to make it at home. I'm not too worried about the holiday eating. As far as I know we don't have any big plans. Hopefully life will destress a little bit as work slows down and things calm down and I might actually lose a bit of weight. This is the first year we aren't going down south in quite some time. The plan is to spend time snowshoeing, skiing, and introducing my DH to weightlifting. For the actual holiday we'll probably have an open house for any friends and acquaintances who have no one to spend the time with. We did it a few years ago and asked that people bring either a dish, drink, or entertainment and ended up with quite an assortment of folks from a few college students to some elderly friends with no family in the area. It works out well for me because I'm always on the move preparing or cleaning and I don't get much time to sit around and eat. My plan is to increase my activities and have a few lighter than normal eating days each week. Tonight my trainer said he wants me to focus on increasing my exercise by just 5 minutes each day for the next few weeks. I had already beaten him to the punch starting on Monday Jenn |

I cut back on calories most days in November and December to allow
myself to eat more at Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner and holiday parties. And as others have said, I'm especially diligent about exercising. As always, YMMV. Kasey 365/224/??? |

I only have to face them at the fall festivals in the area. We had our team holiday dinner yesterday afternoon at a local restaurant and I managed to stay on track. I knew I was going to indulge in their house dessert so I ordered a light entree. I couldn't finish the dessert and I bypassed dinner last night. I finished the day with 1100 calories - a little low for me but I just wasn't hungry in the evening. Today will be another round of holiday events. It's our entire department pot luck luncheon. I haven't had a problem with this event in past years and I'm hoping for the same results this year. There will be tons of food but I fill up on the lowest calorie items available and limit the higher calorie food. I plan to meet Chris, one of our fellow ASD members, this evening for dinner. I'm sure we can find something light to eat and maybe get in some walking and shopping Beverly |
