Well, not all bars use this trick to alter their carbohydrate count;
the brand I eat does not. And I'm pretty happy with the nutrient mix
in my bars. When I eat one, I make sure it fits into my counts for
the day. I'm not a low-carber anyway, nor am I a sugar avoider.

Are you making this up? I've never heard of proteins "rotting" in
products stored on the shelf. And, if the oils in bars become rancid
and the proteins rotten, why not the oils and proteins in nuts, which
are also packaged for shelf life?

Bars as useful as a portable snack. I am hardly going to carry a
piece of meat around in my purse all day. While fruit is portable, it
lacks protein. I like nuts but they're very calorie-dense, and I do
not find 180 calories worth of nuts as filling as my 180-calorie bars.
And if I'm looking for quick energy I do better with something with
more carbs than the nuts have.

Well, how I spend my money is kind of up to me. I probably spend it
on all sorts of things I don't really need -- food and otherwise --
but so be it. Ain't your problem.

And you know what? Sometimes I actually buy food just because it
tastes good. Terrible, huh :-).

A piece of meat isn't always available - for those who work or spend
time away from areas that would allow for cooking, heating, etc.

Nuts are a big pitfall for me. A serving of nuts is about 1/4 a cup
- or about one handful. That isn't enough to satisfy my hunger and
the calorie count is too high that I'd have to cut back somewhere else
in the day to compensate. And then there's the sodium factor of many
nuts out there. ANd the lack of taste for those unsalted ones.

Frankly, I keep protein bars at work for those days when I get stuck
with an emergency and can't get away for lunch. But eating one is
not an every day occurance.


I have to agree with Ig on this one this time about the bars having
hidden carbs and sugars. Not to mention being expensive if used more
than occasionally(2x a month or something). To me they taste funny
because they are protein normally trying to masquerade as something
sweet. If I want chocolate I will eat REAL chocolate (just in moderation
and accounted for in my WOE) Not some bar that says "S'more" on it.
Plus, they are just so.. Processed. I am not totally against processed
foods, but they are overly so.

I agree. I have often been very hungry at BF's office and that is all he
had to offer. I think it must be psychological as the sugar alcohols upset
my stomach but I would rather go hungry than eat fake chocolate! I like
engineering but not where my food is concerned!

values a few years ago ... I've always been watchful and mindful of

fact. So, when I choose and purchase a protein bar, I look at the

content
and the nutritional breakdown. I pay attention to those things, and

will
purchase the bars that give a more accurate account.

Also, I don't eat the bars as candy bars. For me, the bars are there

for
a
quick meal on the go when something else can't do. Or as a meal

before
a
workout when I need something. They are not a part of my daily diet.

are not a "treat" or eaten in lue of chocolate or candy. They are

used
for
when i'm leavign work and going straight to the gym and need something

to
tied me over until dinner 4 hrs later. They are available when some
emergency arrises at work and I can't leave for lunch.

I'll chose a bar over a fast food hamburger meal. That is my

preference
and my opinion.

long hike. They're easier to eat when one is walking.

Distance runners eat them while they run. They are good choice for many.
Sweeping statements are usually wrong.

vacation, I stock up on bars to bring with us. At that time I end up
getting a variety too. There's the MetRx kind - the total meal

replacement
w/ beaucoup cals and carbs in them. Down to the little itty bitty bars
I'll use as the quick snack to tied me over till meal time when

travelling.

Yep, I like the MetRx ones. There is another brand I like that has enough
protein and are a bit cheaper, I forgot the name. I don't have any in the
house right now, but I usually buy them by the box at Trader Joe's. I keep a
few in my Emergency Kit next to the water bottles, canned tuna & wine (just
in case). : )

I use them as you do, not for a substitute for a candy bar, but when I'm
running late for work or on the go, or on a long day hike.

Some of the bars out there are nasty, some are not too bad. I find they
don't satisfy my need for a meal, but they are wonderful for getting me
through cardio at the gym and I usually eat one between weightlifting and
cardio if I am due for a meal. They are indeed also great for work if you
can't get away. I think they certainly have their place, but I know someone
who practically lives on them, and I can't imagine what is going on in their
digestive system. Elise.
