Another bar my mom sent was CarboRite SugarFree.

It argues: Total Carb = 15.00. Fiber = 0. However, they subtracted 14 grams
of Sugar Alcohols for a grand total of 1 Net Carb.

Is this fishy?

Ingredients: Chocolate [Lacititol, Maltitol, Cocoa Butter, Chocolate Liquor,
Sodium Caseinate, Milk Fat, Soya Lecithin (an emulsifier), Vanillin (artificial
flavor), Sucralose (Splenda Brand), Natural Flavor, Vanilla, Salt], Peanut

Rapeseed Oils, Coconut Oil, Fractininated Palm Kernel Oil, Sodium Caseinate,
Milk Fat, Glycerol-lacto Esters of Fatty Acids, Soya Lecithin (emulsifier),
Citric Acid, Vanillan (artificial flavor), Natural Flavor]

Your mother, while well meaning, and her heart is in the right place, sent
you a cocktail of junk food that really is not much benefit to your diet.
Eat and enjoy, but please use them sparingly. YMMV

Many people have no problems with sugar alcohols, others will say that
they're straight from the pits of nutritional hell. In actuality, it's a
YMMV thing; you need to find out whether they affect you or not.

The fact is that sugar alcohols, like fiber, do not affect blood sugar
levels in most people so they can be subtracted from total carb counts.
Sugar alcohols pass through the stomach and upper intestine undigested, and
partially ferment in the lower intestine. This causes gas in many people,
but usually only when eaten in too large a quantity. (I see this as a good
thing; it keeps me from eating too many Atkins Advantage bars g)

Personally I have no problem with eating sugar alcohols occassionally; I'md
iabetic and they do not affect my BG or cause problems with my weight loss,
so a low-carb SA-sweetened treat once in a while for me is not out of the
question. The key though is "once in a while."

I suspect that if you sit down and eat five or six of the bars, you'll
rapidly find out why so many diss them. And so will everyone in your
household.

Beyond the issue of the sugar alcohols, the label is still fishy.

There are carbs in peanuts. There are carbs in bakers' chocolate which is
what "chocolate liquor" is.

Hydrogenated oils are poison. Every single low carb diet book author urges
you not to eat them because they deposit right smack onto your arteries.
These bars are full of them.
