Day 13 of 100 Days
Day 13 and 3 more pounds gone.
I got on the scale a little bit ago and found out I weighed 230 (well, just under 231) and so 6 pounds are gone in the last 13 days. I had about 850 calories yesterday but have had very little salt the last two days and I think much of the loss should be attributed to lack of salt. Today I'm off to the office to do paperwork and we are going to change a toilet at home, after we get linoleum off the floor and put down new linoleum, etc. My target today is about 800 calories and by now, It's not really difficult for me to skip meals, avoid tasting things that look good, etc. When I was a kid, we used to go everywhere barefoot – and as we lived on the Big Island of Hawaii, with its volcanic ash underfoot – our feet got to be fairly tough. I don't think my food self-denial tendencies are as tough as my feet were then, but they are getting stronger. "No, thank!" is something that I say a heck of a lot more than I used to, and I'm staying out of fast-food places, etc. This afternoon I'm going up my little hill with my far better half. I think the weather here might be cloudy and cool today – perfect for walking. I hope everyone has a great weekend and a great week ahead! Yours, Caleb 236/230/190 |

L -- I'm not a physiologist, physician, nurse, etc. (I'm a
psychologist.) From my perspective, the so-called "starvation effect" is grossly exaggerated. It is my understanding that none of the animal studies show that reducing calories inhibits weight loss. Indeed the relationship between calorie restriction and weight loss is pretty doggone linear -- the more calories are restricted, the more weight is lost. If people want to eat 1500 calories a day, that's fine. It might be easier, more comfortable for them, etc. And perhaps they do have medical conditions which preclue a greater calorie deficit. For women, though, the target calorie goal should be something like 1450 calories a day anyway -- I forget the exact number now, and clearly this would vary from person to person, depending on body size, muscle, activity level, age, etc. At any rate, if one allows only a small calorie restriction a day, then it's more difficult to lose weight rather rapidly and therefore also more difficult to remain on a given diet and exercise program long enough for it to do a person some good. If you don't mind, I'd be interested in your asking your nutritionist for the basic physiological research which shows the "starvation effect" to be a major factor. "Some guy on the internet was asking me about the studies, and I was curious about them myself..." I tried to ask our states veterinarian groups for any reaction to the "starvation effect" -- that is, do they recommend increasing calories to help dogs lose weight? But I got no response back. I think Mark Mattson's work on intermittent eating is just going to blow a low of this stuff out of the water. I know that I overeat mainly because the good-tasting food is there and I have been in the habit of eating it for decades. Anyway, these are my own two cents on the subject. Frankly I think people lose weight a lot of times in spite of nutritionists (just as I think a lot of people are happier in spite of the hurdle of seeing psychologists). Good luck! I wish you every success! Yours, Caleb (LCT) wrote in message . com... Caleb, I have been reading your daily updates and want to congratulate you on your progress! Six pounds in two weeks! That is wonderful news. You sound like you are eating about 800 calories a day. I talked to my nutritionist and he said our bodies need around 1500 just to function, and that anything under 1000 would make our bodies go into "starvation" mode. So if you eat anything more than 1000, your body will not have the same type of metabolism it used to have before you started the 800 calorie diet. Am I wrong? I am currently on a 1500 calorie diet because I am afraid of going lower than 1000. I think I have pretty good metabolism, am 20% body fat (and a woman), but am in the market to lose more weight. Any thoughts? L (Kalepa) wrote in message . com... Day 13 and 3 more pounds gone.
