McTygue owes his weight loss to Atkins diet

McTygue owes his weight loss to Atkins diet CHRISTINE MARGIOTTA , The Saratogian 09/21/2003 SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Public Works Commissioner Tom McTygue firmly believes people have control over their own health. And about seven months ago, he decided to take control of his weight problem by going on the Atkins diet. McTygue lost about 40 pounds, going from a 44 to a 38 waist, and hopes to close in on his goal of a 36 waist within the month. But he also dropped more than pounds and pant sizes -- McTygue improved his health so much he was able to go off a medication for heart regulation and blood pressure. 'My doctor told me I should be his poster patient,' McTygue said with a laugh. McTygue discussed going on the much-debated Atkins diet with his doctor in February and began the program at the end of that month, giving up coveted foods like pasta, mashed potatoes and desserts. 'Nobody loved pasta more than me,' McTygue said. 'But the benefits I've received outweigh the pleasure of eating the pasta.' Now, he and his wife, Sandy, eat the Atkins way together. They have a protein shake for breakfast, a meat and vegetable or salad with chicken for lunch, then the same type of meal for dinner. On the weekends, they go out to dinner and eat what they want within reason, incorporating some of the old favorites like pasta into their dinners now that the extremely low-carbohydrate phase of the diet is over. And with a higher energy level and healthier outlook, McTygue has never enjoyed life so much. 'I feel 100 percent better than I did last year at this time,' he said. 'It's the best thing I did for myself.' ©The Saratogian 2003 |

McTygue owes his weight loss to Atkins diet
It is good to see someone from my area get some spotlight in the news! An
article was in the Glens Falls Post-Star recently about Atkins, but maybe people seeing a well known public figure having success will get more people to change their eating habits.
