The occasional cheat, followed by a small whoosh!?
Greetings Fellow Low-Carbers...
'Splain this to me: I'm not sure why, but on the odd occasion when I allow myself to cheat, not only does it not seem to affect me (or knock me out of ketosis), but - perversely enough - it sometimes will result in a slightly accelerated weight drop. Example: I'd been hovering around 244 for a day or so. I'd already cheated at lunch by having a "house special" roll and a couple of pieces of sushi with the rice for lunch. That evening, I decided "screw it" and pigged out on pizza - 4 slices of Papa Johns thin crust, and 3-4 pieces of "chicken sticks" appetizer to boot. Now, in the old days I'd polish off most of a large by myself, but after 4 pieces plus the chicken sticks I was stuffed to the gills (think "Mr. Creosote", if you're a Monty Python fan). I shudder to think what the carb count for the day was. So the next morning I step on the scale....and I'm at 242. The day after that, I hit 241. I don't do it often - I don't want to revive old eating habits - but it seems like the occasional cheat doesn't hurt me. What gives? LowCarbLurker 262/241/175 (since 9/8/2003) P.S. My coworkers are starting to notice. A woman I worked with stopped me in the hall yesterday with "you look different - are you smaller?" and when I told her I'd lost 20 pounds in the past 6 weeks she looked worried and said she hoped I wasn't sick. Which evolved into a 4-person hallway mini-seminar on Atkins. I got into this to knock down my high cholestrol and triglycerides, not further my modeling career (haha)...but it's nice to get compliments. And fit into all those old clothes I never had the heart to give to Goodwill (down from a 42 waist to all my old comfortably sprung 40 waist jeans, and some of my cool old XL t-shirts fit again...) |

The occasional cheat, followed by a small whoosh!?
I read a web page recently that gave a scientic explanation for this.
Apparently after you have been losing weight for a while the body tries to resist further weight loss by adjusting the production of chemicals (leptin?) in the body. If you eat 'norally' for a short period your metabolism is 'reset' and the weight loss resistance is relaxed. I have no idea how much truth there is in this, but it makes a kind of sense. Sorry I can't remember the web address Martin I wonder how long that short period might be? And the trick is having the self-discipline to get back to LCing thereafter. -- Jean B., 12 miles west of Boston, Massachusetts, USA |
