Default Blood sugars too high on plan

Good morning!

I have been on Atkins for four weeks now and lost 13 pounds and now I
have gained 3 pounds back. I was a heavy insulin user and am trying to
cut back but my sugars were rising in spite of LC so I only take the
fast acting when they are up, which is about every second or third
day.

I have found the Atkins bars are affecting my blood sugar in spite of
the claim that sucralose has no effect on bs levels.

I have not cheated one bit on my diet and this morning my bs is 14.4

I am on actose and glucophage for my diabetes. I want to get off of
insulin as it is hanging on to the fat and doesn't want to let go.

Any ideas out there, would sure be appreciated.

Cut the Atkins bars. A side affect of high insulin is wieght gain.
Maybe you are getting more carbs than you think, post a sample
menu here and I am sure someone can help you.

Simple. Don't eat the Atkins bars.

Apparently it isn't true for everyone, but I have found for me that Sorbitol
and Splenda definitely raise my blood readings.

It's not the sucralose, it's the sugar alcohols (maltitol, lactitol,
etc - look for "-ol" on ingredient names). For some folks, these act
just like sugar. Apparently, you're one of those folks, so avoid
sugar alcohols just like you avoid carbs. FYI: For the other types of
folks, SAs cause diarrhea. Not sure which is worse ;-)

If you want to test sucralose separately, buy a can of waist watchers
soda and see how it affects you.

Cut the Atkins bars -- as other have said, they have sugar alcohols and
these are known to cause some people problems. I'd say leave the sucralose
for the moment and see if just cutting the Atkins bars helps. If not, the
cut sucralose too. Also, stay away from any sugar-free candies that have
sugar alcohols in them, until you get the situation under control and you
understand their affect on your BG levels.

Well, many of use believe that those bars should be considered "cheats" --
if you want to use that term. I eat them, but there is a price to be paid
for doing so.

Check your blood sugar with your monitor before eating an Atkin's bar and
re-check about an hour and a half after you've eaten it. Got a spike? Dump
the bars and don't eat anything with similar ingredients! BTW, after you
lose some more weight, you may find that your need for insulin is lessened.
I went from 5 shots a day to 1 or 2. I do take Glucophage still but I'm in
the normal range now

Default Yesterday menu - Blood sugars too high on plan

Good morning!

Thanks so much for all the replies...you folks are just great!

Here is what I had yesterday:

Breakfast: 3 hard boiled eggs
Lunch: 1 piece A&W chicken, 3 or 4 mini carrots, 1 oz marble cheese
Supper:: 3 pieces A&W chicken
Snack: 1 boiled egg, handful of piggy puffs, few sips of Fresca pop (
I really drink very little of this aspartame stuff)

That is it for the whole day.....not much carbs there. Would the skin
of the chicken make any difference I wonder.

I wonder if that is maybe the problem as the last few days I have cut
way back because of my fear of high blood sugars.

I was eating the Atkins bars until the weekend and then I figured I
would cut them out and see if my blood sugars dropped but it doesn't
seemed to have made a difference.

I also work out on the treadmill - 30 minutes, 5X a week and a small
amount of weight lifting.

Chicken skin doesn't have carbs. It does have a few types of fats
that are good for you, though.

One thing to try is to weight all your foods and figure out exactly
how much protein you're getting. If it's too much, that might affect
blood sugar. You may want to get more fats and less protein;
see Jenny's page to help figure it all out.

It may take a while for your body to adapt. Stick with your meds and
watch the BG closely. Even if it's not reacting the way you want, at
least LC will keep it from getting worse.

A&W Chicken must have some carbs as the skin is heavily coated with flour
before cooking.

Don't eat the skin! Or at least minimize the amount you eat.....I know, I
know.....it's the best part!

Does anyone have the nutritional info on A&W, or KFC?
