how many times per week would I exercise?

I am doing cardio.... some people say 5 times a week is the upper limit.

Is this true?

I would say the rule of thumb would be over 50% of the time. So, 4 days a
week IMHO is minimum, but this depends on your personality. If you really
hate working out and can't stand it more than 3 days a week, then that is
much better than nothing. I try to get in 5 days a week, but may bump that
up for the summer. There is no upper limit unless you are lifting or hard
running. Your body does need to recover. For example, an Ironman
competitor would take a day or two off a week, but they are taking 60+ mile
bike rides and running over 13 miles at a pretty fast pace, not to mention
swimming a boat load. Those kind of distances require some rest time, or
easy days depending on the person's regiment.

So, I guess what I am saying is try to get 4 days in. If you enjoy it go
for more, but if you hit a muscle group hard or an area of your body, that
area may need to recover or need a rest day.

If you want to get really scientific, you would have to know more about your
body type. Some people do best working out really hard and more rest days
and some people do better working out all the time.

My experience for myself is, lifting weights, I need my rest days. Cardio
and such, I can go pretty much all the time, unless I go really long, like a
60+ mile bicycle ride.

Just do it!
Curt

Anything can be done everyday, it all depends....heck, I used to do 2 hours

I do cardio around 30 minutes every day. If it is nice outside, I'll go
jogging. Otherwise I'll use my stairmaster. I feel strange if I miss a
day.

You should not do weight training every day, but that doesn't apply to
cardio.
