atkins suggested this in my copy of ATKINS LC.

i like to eat ONLY when hungry, rather than naming and timing my meals,
breakfast, lunch, dinner.

anyone have any thoughts on that?
anyone here believe that you MUST start your day with a meal? even when

Wiser to stop eating before you are full (i.e. stay hungry):

The alternative is to become stricken with diabetes:

He also suggested to eat until full. He wasn't consistant about
his wording so it's hard to tell if he meant those to mean the
same or as separate statements.

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" suggests that if
you eat before you get hungry in the first place there's the ability
to end up eating less across the day.

The biggest advantage that Atkins has is that most people who
follow the directions are hungry for a very small number of days
for the entire time they are on the plan. The cravings of Induction,
the discovery of each problem food, reaching CCLM at the end of
pre-maintenance.

To me this prevention aspect is just another bit on how to
conduct an Atkins plan to never get hungry.

Never think that since following the process carefully to build a
custom Atkins for yourself means you're never hungry gives
you any immunity from falling off plan. Easy to stay on is NOT
hard to fall off.

anyone here believe that you MUST start your day with a meal? even when

That must part is clearly wrong. It's true that most people who
manage to keep off loss for years don't skip breakfast and so
that's what to try first. But it doesn't mean it will work for
everyone.

Starting the day with a meal even though you're not hungry is
the first thing to try, because it should end up giving you better
portion control for the rest of the day. But it's not the only thing
to try.

He clarified this to "eat till satisfied, not satiated" in his later books.

That leaves little to doubt.

And he said it several times.

Many diet books today encourage many small meals and/or snacks. I
believe the thinking is to not become REAL HUNGRY and you end up gorging.

For some people, it might work out well to not eat till hungry (Rather
than REAL HUNGRY) and then eat "enough". "Enough" may vary from person
to person, and since I don't do this, I offer no further clarification
of what the OP meant.

If you don't overeat at every meal, it's fairly easy to be hungry at
breakfast time, lunch time, and dinner time. Frankly, it's one method I use
to know if I'm overeating or not. If I do overeat, then I'll skip a meal if
I'm not hungry. And if I should get hungry before the next meal, then I can
eat a very small meal before the next meal or just wait til the next meal.
Being a little extra hungry from time to time isn't going to kill me or
anybody else.

The advantage of several small meals combined with a LC diet is that you can
eat to stay "just passed" the hunger. Eating smaller portions and spacing
them out automatically gives your body time to send signals from point A to
point B, so that your body has time to react to food. Larger meals that you
put on a plate without consideration for hunger on a LC diet will probably
result in your eating "far passed" the hunger, since you're eating according
to what you put in the plate rather than what your body is doing.

I don't think you must start your day with a meal. But if you're not hungry
in the am, it's probably because you ate too much the night before. If you
want to maintain your weight, either don't eat or eat a smaller meal. Many
things can work, but the most important factor is that you actively think
about it and react with a degree of flexibility. Nothing is written in
stone. Many things can work. Personally, I see nothing wrong with being a
bit hungry before a meal. Yes, being a lot hungry can cause problems, but
simply getting hungry before mealtime shouldn't be a big deal. And this is
all said in the context of a LC diet where appetite suppression is working.

I don't think it's necessary to eat breakfast every day either. Some
days, if I'm not hungry, I'll just wait and have an early lunch. Nor
do I think if I skip breakfast that it means I'm going to eat much more
at lunch. Certainly not likely to eat more at lunch than the calories
in what breakfast would have been.

Another aspect of limiting your food intake can be to eat small
portions, spaced out during a meal. I've never left a French
restaurant feeling hungry, even though all the portions tend to be
small and they are well known for giving little quantity for the $$$.
That's because the meal is spaced out over maybe 2 1/2 hours. So,
the food has time to satiate your appetite. If I had all that food
available in 20 mins, I'm sure I could put it all away and still be
hungry.
