NYT Op-Ed Piece
Just a slice from today's NYT Op-Ed that I was glad to read....
From: The Food Pyramid Scheme http://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/01/op...01wed2.html?th "This curious avoidance of the growing evidence about the dangers of added sugar would be inexplicable but for the fact that seven members of the panel - which was chosen by the Health and Human Services Department - have major financial and organizational connections to the food, drug and dietary supplement industries. It strains the imagination to believe that the sugar industry did not have undue influence this time around. The government will collect public comments on the panel's recommendations until Sept. 27. Public health advocates are generally satisfied with its other recommendations, which encourage, for example, eating more vegetables. But it's crucial that unambiguous advice about sugar consumption be in the final guidelines in early 2005." -- Rudy - Remove the Z from my address to respond. The sugar industry is nervous, I've been seeing commercials to the effect
that sugar is grown on your friendly neighborhood farms, implying that if you quit eating sugar they will go belly up. My response--grow broccoli! I read the same article myself. Considering that the original food pyramid wasn't based on anything sound, either, and was concocted by a group of lawyers, this doesn't surprise me in the least. I think our government is rapidly losing any remaining credibility it may have had in this and other health-related areas due to the amount of influence this administration has allowed industry to exert on the policy-setting panels and agencies. Just review some of the recent scandals in the FDA and you'll see where this is going.
