Default Diet Soda Does Make You Fat!

"Recent study show that drinking “diet” drinks, and specially diet
soda actually increase the risk of being overweight.

Here’s some findings from an 8-year University of Texas study that I
had read…

An excerpt from the study author:

“What didn’t surprise us was that total soft drink use was linked to
overweight and obesity,” Fowler tells WebMD. “What was surprising was
when we looked at people only drinking diet soft drinks, their risk of
obesity was even higher.”

“There was a 41 percent increase in risk of being overweight for every
can or bottle of diet soft drink a person consumes each day,” Fowler
says."

The real question here is how this study could seperate out whether
the diet soda was actually a risk factor that causes the obesity or if
it was just that fat people drink more diet soda because they are
trying to reduce caloric intake. Unless they somehow determined
that, then the study is just about meaningless.

The real question here is how this study could seperate out whether
the diet soda was actually a risk factor that causes the obesity or if
it was just that fat people drink more diet soda because they are
trying to reduce caloric intake. Unless they somehow determined
that, then the study is just about meaningless.

Yes, and as has been discussed many times, how many whoppers and fries
are eaten along with the diet sodas?


I heard a recent tidbit regarding this story. The idea is that the
sweeteners in diet soda trigger the insulin response just like regular
sugar does. I think this may be mentioned in DANDR, in which case it's
not such a new idea after all.

It wasn't in anything I've read from Atkins. He clearly had no
problem with people using sugar substitutes, other that vaguely
stating that he recommended Splenda over Aspartame because from his
clinical experience, he thought Aspartame could inhibit weight loss in
some people. But AFAIK, he never speculated on the mechanism. Also,
I don't see how an artificial sweetner could trigger the same insulin
response as sugar. If it were that simple, with all the diabetics
and research along those lines, it would have been well documented by
now.

Most recently, there was some research with rats that associated
artificial sweetner intake with weight gain. But as I recall, the
mechanism was identified.

Then how about this conclusion - Diet sodas do little to
assist loss.

Since the data said the more diet soda consumed the
more risk of obesity, we can't say diet sodas caused the
obesity but we can say they don't cure it.

I haven't seen the actual study, so I don't know what the actual
results were. But the summary link posted above drew the correlation
simply between being overweight and the use of diet beverages. So,
you could have the scenario where people using diet beverages as part
of their diet, while still overweight by the charts, would weigh even
more without the diet beverages. Instead of being overweight by 10
lbs, the person could be overweight by 25 lbs, the overweight person
could be an obese person, etc. That would be a drastically
different outcome than what the short summary article implies, because
then the diet beverages could indeed help in keeping weight off.

And the scenario of people using diet beverages to help keep off
weight seems to be a very reasonable possibility, because we all know
that few people who are overweight manage to get down to their ideal
weight. But a lot of them might be even heavier without the diet
beverages.

What does insulin do when it can't find any carbohydrates to process?


The answer, relating to this issue, is that the release of
insulin would cause lipolysis to stop or be inhibited.
