I am going on a 7 night Carribean cruise - leaving Miami Sept 12. I

think
with all the buffets on the ship - I should easily be able to eat LC and
guess what - I don't gotta cook - what could be better -

Just got off a Caribbean cruise. It would have been very, very easy to
stay LC while on board. I chose not to (I always cheat on vacation),
but the LC choices were plentiful. The ship that I was on had a
breakfast buffet with scrambled eggs or made-to-order omelets with
lots of filling choices, plus bacon, sausage, breakfast ham, oatmeal
(okay for South Beachers?), melon, cheeses, etc. Lunches were a little
tougher but they always had something at the carving station, big
salad bar with lots of toppings, platters of cold cuts and cheeses,
fruit, etc. At dinner, you could always opt for a steak or broiled
chicken if none of the entrees worked for you. Salads always available
as well as yummy appetizers like shrimp cocktail, smoked salmon,
escargot, etc. If you're disciplined, you can eat very well on an LC
diet while cruising.

oh yeah - a gym on
the ship -

Don't expect the gym to be like the one at home. Some are better than
others. The gym on the ship I was on ws awful, imho. They had about 4
treadmills, a couple of elliptical trainers and two stationary bikes.
They had a full rack of dumb bells and four weight machines. That's
about it. Could have used a rack of bar bells, several more machines
and another bench or two (there was only one bench). They offered some
fitness classes. Step aerobics was no extra charge, but yoga and
fitness ball carried an additional $10 charge. I used the gym once and
left aggravated so didn't return. We do try to be active while in
port, though.

and a spa (maybe a nice spa treament to reward my 24 pound loss -
so far).

I've had good luck with the quality of spa services I've gotten on
cruises. They are, however, very costly - way more than you'd pay at
home. Also, there's usually a very hard sell for you to buy product.
Be firm, let them know up front that you're just there for the
treatment and you're not interested in the product. They make
commission on the stuff, so they push and push.

I am so excited to go. It's my first cruise ever and I hope not
my last.

Just got back from my tenth cruise (8 different cruise lines) so if
you have any questions, feel free to email me privately. You'll have a
great time.

Lee

SInce this is my first - and hope not my last - I'm not sure what to ask.
Someone did tell me though that it might be a good idea to get a shot for
sea sickness the first day you board the ship. Has anyone done this or not
done it and wish they did?

A shot????? I've never heard that before in my life. Sometimes, the
doctor on board will give a shot (compazine) to someone who is really
suffering from seasickness, but I've NEVER heard ot a shot given
prophylactically.

Not to mention that a visit to the doctor on board is very costly and
the effects of a compazine injection wouldn't last a whole week. Maybe
12 hours? I'm not a doctor, but the injection idea is a bad one to
count on. Visit rec.travel.cruises and search for the numerous motion
sickness threads that have popped up the past couple of months.
Nothing about injections, but some other good advice.

I'm very prone to sea sickness, and I use the OTC medicine Bonine
(active ingredient meclizine). I do use this prophylactically, because
of my history of the queasys. It's easier to avoid sea sickness
altogether than it is to get rid of it once you've got it. I chew two
tablets each night before bed and I'm good to go. Minimal drowsiness
(especially because I sleep 6 or 7 hours after I take it), dose lasts
24 hours, you can drink alcohol (although it may have a greater affect
- but who cares...you're not driving or operating heavy machinery on
a cruise (though sometimes I do question my judgement in the
casino...giggle).

Others use wrist bands that work mechanically on a pressure point .
Tan lines...not good.

You'll see many folks with a patch behind their ear. No, they're not
aliens, nor are they trying to quit smoking. They're using the
prescription drug scopalomine (brand name Trans Derm Scop). I've tried
it, but I find the side effects to be unpleasant and bothersome.

Ginger capsules, or even just chewing on crystallized ginger helps
many, but the crystallized stuff isn't LC.

Remember to always have food in your stomach (not hard in a cruise).

Usually the seas are very calm. Last week was the calmest cruise I've
ever been on. Most of the time, I couldn't even tell I was on a ship.
A few evenings we had some motion, but very little compared to
previous cruises. It's hit or miss, but if you're prepared, I wouldn't
worry about it.

(visit rec.travel.cruises - it's an incredibly helpful cruising
newsgroup. Lots of very knowledgeable people (some trolls). Your
questions will be answered quickly and usually accurately.

I think that that's Royal Caribbean, not carnival.

Just back from a wonderful 4 day trip. I can't even tell you
how easy and thrilling it was to hit the buffets. I'm a frequent
visitor and usually eat at the fancier, and pricier strip hotels,
but this trip I decided to try the cheaper off the strip hotels.
So much to choose from for us LCers. Eggs bacon sausage ham cold
cuts cheeses cream cheese fresh fruit, and that was only part of
the breakfast! I checked the web and found that the Mainstreet
Station had a thursday night special of steak and shrimp scampi.
I drove downtown, parked, played a bit then hit the big beautiful
buffet. To my surprise besides all the Italian, Chinese, Mexican,
America stuff, they had FILET MIGNONs and shrimp scampi! ALL I
wanted, and topped off with a few sugar free desserts! Across the
street from the fancy Palms, is the Gold Coast. Besides the huge
buffet of a million things for the $10 bucks I had smoked pork
ribs and BBQ beef ribs. OH MY GOD..... they were that great. With
some green salad, cole slaw, and again sugar free cheesecake and
whipped cream. I was in heaven. Bottom line after this pigout? I
got home to find I had lost 3 lbs in the 4 days! I ATE LIKE A MAN
ON DEATH ROW! LOL
