Exercise/Calories
Using an online calc I found out in order to maintain my weight I can eat
2365 calories a day. To lose a pound a week I'd eat 1865 calories a day. My goal weight is 175# and in reading this group, to reach that weight I'd be eating 1750 calories a day. Which should I do? What would be a good starting exercise for a nearly 70 year old male, who has never exercised, and has lung disease? Thank you ... eRichard |

Thank you ... eRichard Hi Richard, As far as calories per day, you kind of need to figure out what works for your body. These calorie calculators are rough estimates only; everyone's metabolism is different. I'd recommend using something like fitday.com (online calorie tracking tool) to figure out how many calories per day you're actually eating now to maintain your weight. Then cut 500 from that, eat at that level for a few weeks, and see what happens. If you lose a few pounds, keep at it. If you don't lose, cut some more. If you lose too fast (and ignore the first week, as you'll likely lose more then), add some calories back in. Regarding exercise, I'd recommend discussing anything with your doctor, given the lung disease. However, walking sounds like the best bet as a starting point, if you're able. You should also be able to do some weight training -- maybe get a few dumbbells and do exercises with them. A good site for beginning weight training information is: http://www.stumptuous.com/cms/index.php. Though the site is aimed at women, the information works equally well for men. Good luck, and keep us posted! Chris (female, age 58, by the way) 262/130s/130s |

Exercise/Calories
figuring out the right # of calories is secondary to finding out what is
appropriate for you given your age and health. Talk to your doc first. At your age, if you have never before exercised, I would probably say you need to do something very low impact - say water aerobics or walking. As for calories - do you even have a clue what you are eating now? Whatever that is, subtract a few hundred per day. "eRichard" "LumnAbner(at)Gmail(dot)com" wrote in message . ..
